Can India qualify for WTC 2025-27 final? Qualification scenarios

India start their upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka from August 19, with the two games being played in Galle and Colombo. With 15 out of 27 series still to be played in the World Test Championship (WTC)) cycle, Test cricket has become the centrepiece for the next few months to qualify for the final at the Kennington Oval from June 09 to 13, 2027.

In the last two cycles, the qualifying mark has exceeded 65% for three of four finalists. The only exception was an Indian making the final with 58.8% in 2023. In 2025, both the finalists had more than 67% points.

WTC 2025-27 points table — Where do India stand right now?

Australia have lost only 12 points out of the 96 being on offer for them so far this WTC cycle. They stand at the top of the points table with seven victories in eight clashes at a percentage of 87.50, followed by South Africa’s 75 PCT, having collected three victories in four clashes.

New Zealand, on the other hand, are currently sitting at the third position after a series victory against West Indies (home) and England (away), having a PCT of 72.22. Bangladesh have done well in their campaign, being at the fourth position with four victories at a PCT of 58.33.

Subsequently, India are at the fifth position in the WTC table, bagging four victories at a PCT of 48.15 in nine clashes. West Indies remained at the bottom of the points table with a PCT of 20.83.

WTC 2025-27 qualification scenarios — What India need to make the final

Australia, the Pat Cummins-led side, will come up against Bangladesh and New Zealand at home along with away Tests against the Proteas and the Shubman Gill-led side. Meanwhile, the blue brigade’s recent home form has been anything but convincing, with 3-0 and 2-0 series defeats against the Kiwis and the South African side.

They will also have to overcome the challenges of away series in Sri Lanka and the Blackcaps. India can lose only one game of their remaining nine Test matches, while Australia will need only eight victories in 14 clashes of the longest format. South Africa will need to earn six wins out of the 10 matches.

For the Kiwis, the equation is really tough, with seven wins being required in 10 matches. The Najmul Hossain Shanto-led side will require six wins in eight encounters, while Sri Lanka will have a stiff task of needing seven wins in eight clashes. England and WI are already knocked out of the race for WTC qualification, while Pakistan will need seven wins in as many games
