With a record chase of 406/2 against the West Indies during the 2026 series at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, India achieved the second-highest successful chase in the 50-over format. And they did it with ease in just 43.3 overs. At one point, when even 300 looked threatening, the game evolved late, with 400 no longer a match-winning score. 

ODI cricket has produced some extraordinary run chases, which are based on calculated and strong partnerships along with remarkable individual performances. The record books feature many occasions when the teams have chased totals that once seemed to be impossible.

India, South Africa, England, and Australia are among the teams that have built some of the biggest successful chases in ODI history. Some of these performances have come across different eras and under different conditions. The highest successful ODI chases are not about the final score but a reflection of the pressure, momentum, and changing match situations.

In this article, here is a look at the top 10 successful run chases in the ODIs, which is ranked by the target being chased successfully. From the 400-plus scores to the dramatic last-over finishes, these games represent some of the biggest run-chasing achievements in the history of the 50-over format.

#10 India chasing 356/7 vs England in 2017 (Pune)-

It was the opening ODI of the 2017 series between India and England at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune where the visitors posted a massive score of 350/7 in their allotted 50 overs, thanks to the three half-centuries from Jason Roy, Joe Root, and Ben Stokes. The chase was expected to be a hard one for the home side.

India were reduced to 63/4 in the 12th over of the chase with the dismissal of MS Dhoni as Kedar Jadhav met Virat Kohli in the middle. The duo put up a partnership of 200 runs for the fifth wicket and celebrated their respective centuries. They finally earned the victory by three wickets.

Brief Scores: India 356/7 (Virat Kohli 122, Kedar Jadhav 120, Jake Ball 3/67) beat England 350/7 (Joe Root 78, Hardik Pandya 2/46) by 3 wickets.

#9 England chasing 359/4 vs Pakistan in 2019 (Bristol)-

It was the third ODI of the 2019 series between England and Pakistan at Bristol where the fine 151-run knock from Imam-ul-Haq, along with a fifty from Asif Ali, fired the visitors to 358 runs for the loss of nine wickets in their allotted 50 overs. The others also made small contributions with the bat.

The 159-run opening stand in 17.3 overs gave England a solid start in the chase as Jason Roy smashed 76 runs off 55 balls while Jonny Bairstow nailed 128 runs in 93 balls, smashing 15 boundaries and five sixes. They got over the line by six wickets with 31 balls to spare.

#8 Australia chasing 359/6 vs India in 2019 (Mohali)-

When India registered a massive score of 358 runs for the loss of nine wickets during the fourth ODI of the 2019 series at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali against Australia, thanks to the 143-run knock off 115 balls from Shikhar Dhawan along with a 92-ball 95 from Rohit Sharma, it was anticipated to be a tough chase for the visitors. 

Despite Peter Handscomb’s 117-run knock along with Usman Khawaja’s 91, Australia were under pressure in the chase. But a fiery knock of unbeaten 84 runs off 43 balls from Ashton Turner completed their chase by four wickets with 13 balls to spare.

#7 South Africa chasing 362/6 vs India in 2025 (Raipur)-

In Raipur, during the second ODI of the 2025 series, the twin centuries from Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad, through a partnership of 195 runs for the third wicket, India finished with 358/5 in their allotted 50 overs, while KL Rahul remained unbeaten on 66 runs off 43 balls.

The Proteas got stability from opener Aiden Markram’s 110 off 98 balls, while Matthew Breetzke got 68 runs off 64 balls. But a fine 34-ball 54 from Dewald Brevis and Corbin Bosch’s 29* completed their chase by four wickets with four balls to spare.

 Brief Scores: South Africa 362/6 (Aiden Markram 110, Arshdeep Singh 2/54) beat India 358/5 (Ruturaj Gaikwad 105, Virat Kohli 102, Marco Jansen 2/63) by 4 wickets.

#6 India chasing 362/1 vs Australia in 2013 (Jaipur)-

During the second ODI of the 2013 series in Nagpur, Australia posted a massive score of 359 runs for the loss of five wickets in their 50 overs as all the batters of the top five, Aaron Finch, Phil Hughes, Shane Watson, captain George Bailey, and Glenn Maxwell, got their respective fifties.

India made a rollicking start in the chase with the 176-run opening partnership between Dhawan and Rohit, who smashed an unbeaten 141-run knock off 123 balls with 17 boundaries and four sixes. Kohli remained undefeated on 100 runs off 52 balls with eight boundaries and seven sixes to complete the chase by nine wickets.

Brief Scores: India 362/1 (Rohit Sharma 141*, Virat Kohli 100*, James Faulkner 1/60) beat Australia 359/5 (George Bailey 92*, Vinay Kumar 2/73) by 9-wickets.

#5 England chasing 364/4 vs West Indies in 2019 (Bridgetown)-

It was the opening ODI of the 2019 series between West Indies and England at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown in Barbados. Chris Gayle’s superb knock of 135 runs off 129 balls along with Shai Hope’s fifty propelled them to 360 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their 50 overs.

However, on a good batting surface, the home side wasn’t able to pick up regular wickets as England got several big partnerships with the bat. The twin centuries from Jason Roy and Joe Root set the tone before captain Eoin Morgan smashed a dashing knock of 65 runs off 51 balls to complete the chase by six wickets with eight balls to spare.

Brief Scores: England 364/4 (Jason Roy 123, Joe Root 102, Jason Holder 2/63) beat West Indies 360/8 (Chris Gayle 135, Ben Stokes 3/37) by 6 wickets.

#4 South Africa chasing 372/6 vs Australia in 2016 (Durban)-

The third ODI between South Africa and Australia at Kingsmead in Durban during the 2016 series saw the Proteas completing a massive chase of 372 runs against Australia. The latter posted a huge score of 371/6 in their allotted 50 overs, thanks to the twin centuries from David Warner and captain Steve Smith.

Quinton de Kock’s 70 off 49 balls set the stage for the Proteas in the chase. But the best knock of the evening for them came from David Miller, who remained unbeaten on 118 runs in just 79 balls with 10 boundaries and six sixes to complete the chase. 

Brief Scores: South Africa 372/6 (David Miller 118*, John Hastings 2/79) beat Australia 371/6 (David Warner 117, Steve Smith 108, Imran Tahir 2/54) by 4 wickets.

#3 Netherlands chasing 374/6 vs Scotland in 2025 (Dundee)-

George Munsey’s 191-run knock off 150 balls, along with the half-century from captain and wicket-keeper batter of the Scotland side, Matt Cross, they finished with 369 runs for the loss of six wickets in their allotted 50 overs during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 in Dundee.

Netherlands were given a stiff task. But the Dutch completed the chase by four wickets as Max O’Dowd remained unbeaten on 158 runs off 130 balls while both Noah Croes and Teja Nidamanuru got their respective fifties.

Brief Scores: Netherlands 374/6 (Max O’Dowd 158*, Safyaan Sharif 3/62) beat Scotland 369/6 (George Munsey 191, Michael Levitt 2/41) by 4 wickets.

#2 India chasing 406/2 vs West Indies in 2026 (Guwahati)-

It was only the second time in ODIs that a score of more than 400 runs was chased, and India did it with dominance by eight wickets in hand and with 39 balls to spare. Three centuries from John Campbell, Shai Hope, and Amir Jangoo rocketed the West Indies to 405/7 in their allotted 50 overs of the innings, after being put into bat first.

However, the blue brigade set a strong platform with the 255-run opening partnership between Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. The former cracked a dashing knock of 101 runs off 75 balls while Shubman Gill remained unbeaten on 223 runs off 133 balls with 26 boundaries and eight sixes. 

Brief Scores: India 406/2 (Shubman Gill 223*, Rohit Sharma 101, Shamar Joseph 1/52) beat West Indies 405/7 (Amir Jangoo 114, Shai Hope 104, Kuldeep Yadav 2/65) by 8 wickets.

#1 South Africa chasing 438/9 vs Australia in 2006 (Johannesburg)-

That was the first time in the ODIs when a 400+ score was chased in the ODIs. Thanks to captain Ricky Ponting’s superb knock of 164 runs off 105 balls and an 81-run knock off 51 balls from Michael Hussey, the Aussies posted a massive score of 434 runs for the loss of four wickets in their 50 overs.

Graeme Smith drilled 90 runs off 55 balls with 13 boundaries and two sixes, while Herschelle Gibbs nailed a superb knock of 175 runs off 111 balls with 21 boundaries and seven sixes at a strike rate of 157.65. The Proteas recorded the chase by one wicket on the penultimate delivery.

South Africa have completed the highest successful chase of 435 runs in List A cricket when they did it in 2006 at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.

In Indian domestic cricket, Karnataka made the highest successful chase of 413 runs against Jharkhand in 2005 in Ahmedabad.

India’s highest successful chase in ODIs came in 2026 when they chased 406 runs against West Indies at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.

In the ODIs, twice a team has chased down a target of more than 400 runs, which was through India vs West Indies and South Africa vs Australia.
