It was the fourth Test match between England and Australia at Old Trafford in Manchester in 1956 when the home side posted 459 runs on the board. The tourists were bundled out for just 84, with Jim Laker ending with figures of 9/37 in 16.4 overs. Jim Burke was the only batter not to get dismissed by Laker in that innings.

But the off-spinner bettered the number in the second innings and returned with figures of 10/53 in 51.2 overs as the visitors, despite showing incredible patience in facing 150.2 overs, were rolled over for 205 runs and lost the encounter by innings and 170. Jim Laker ended the game with figures of 19/90 in 68 overs.
