Top 5 players who have played for only one team in the IPL

From Jasprit Bumrah at Mumbai Indians to Sunil Narine at Kolkata Knight Riders — here's a look at the top 5 players who have remained loyal to just one team throughout their IPL careers

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has witnessed several players switching their franchises over the years. However, there has been a select group of players who have remained loyal to a single team throughout their careers. It takes a lot to stay in the same franchise, as there is a constant desire and pressure to keep performing season after season to win the trust of the owners.

The journeys of these one-franchise players become closely tied to the identity of their respective sides, making them fan favourites and enduring symbols of consistency. Whenever one takes the name of a player, without a second thought, the franchise’s name appears, which shows the connection between the two.

Staying with that one side in the IPL is very unpredictable and isn’t an easy achievement at all. Auctions, trades, changing team combinations, along with the strategies, often push the players to move from one franchise to another. Yet, a few players have built remarkable careers without taking on the jersey of another side.

For the supporters too, it becomes quite easy to know their players. It’s a unique feeling to watch a player spend multiple years representing the same side. The association goes beyond just a few numbers, with the memorable performances, celebrations, and big-match moments becoming part of the team’s history.

These types of players have contributed in many ways for the side in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Some of them have been prolific with the bat while others have delivered crucial wickets. A few have become leaders and senior members within the side as their loyalty and longevity have made them special in the competition’s history.

One team, one loyalty — Top 5 players who have played for only one IPL side

From the renowned stars to the players who have made a lasting impact, these players have demonstrated that loyalty can just be as valuable as individual brilliance in the tournament. Here are the top five players who have played for only one side in the history of the IPL:

#5 Lasith Malinga (Mumbai Indians)-

The Mumbai Indians grew a fairytale story with the former Sri Lankan pacer, Lasith Malinga. He ends his IPL career with the same franchise, having collected 170 wickets in 122 innings of the league at an average of just below 20 and a fine strike rate of 16.6, along with an economy rate of just over seven, thanks to the best bowling figures of 5/13 in an innings.

Malinga joined the franchise in 2009 when he picked up 18 wickets with the ball in 13 innings at an average of 17.27 and a stunning economy rate of 6.28. His prime and best campaign with the franchise came in 2011 when he ended up with 28 wickets in just 16 innings at an average of 13.39 and kept the economy rate below six.

Lasith Malinga followed it up with 22 wickets in 2012, 20 scalps in 2013, and 24 more in 2015. His last season was in 2019 before he retired from the game with 16 wickets for the MI side, most memorably picking up the wicket of Shardul Thakur on his last ball in the final against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Hyderabad to win their fourth title of the tournament.

Malinga is still associated with the franchise but in a different shape. He is currently the fast-bowling coach of the side, taking over the position from Shane Bond in 2024, and has helped Jasprit Bumrah grow a lot in the last few seasons. He also coaches the sister franchises- MI New York (Major League Cricket) and MI Cape Town (SA20).

#4 Kieron Pollard (Mumbai Indians)-

It’s the story of how a franchise made the right decision in signing a player even before the auction. West Indies’ Dwayne Bravo was leaving the side when he informed the MI side about a young all-rounder, Kieron Pollard, who got to play in his very first IPL season in 209.

Along with his 273 runs in 14 innings at a strike rate of 185.71, Pollard bagged 15 wickets out of his 12 innings at an economy rate of 7.40. In 2012, he scored 220 runs at a strike rate of 138.36 as he picked up 16 wickets, his best, at an average of 21.87 and an economy rate of under eight.

Slowly, Pollard started to gain his confidence with the bat and convert himself into a specialist batter. In 2015, he thumped 419 runs at a strike rate of 163.67 with two fifties, helping them to win their second title.

In the 2021 edition of the competition, Pollard made 245 runs at the best score of unbeaten 87 runs, which came at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi against CSK when he walked out to bat at a critical juncture of the game. He is currently the batting coach of the MI side in the IPL and captained the sister franchises, including MI Emirates (ILT20), MI New York (MLC), and MI Cape Town (SA20).

#3 Sunil Narine (Kolkata Knight Riders)-

The West Indies off-spinner, Sunil Narine, has been playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL since the 2012 edition. Over the years, he has grown the trust and faith of the management to play a massive role in their success. In his very first season, Narine collected 24 wickets in 15 innings at an economy rate of 5.47 and an average of 13.50.

The West Indies spinner followed it up with 22 wickets in 2013 at an economy rate of just 5.46. He again crossed the 20-wicket mark with the ball in the 2014 season at an economy rate of 6.35. There was a period later in his career when he struggled a little, in which he couldn’t pick many wickets but held a good economy rate.

In 2017, their former captain, Gautam Gambhir, promoted Narine to bat as the opener when he smashed 224 runs in the season at a strike rate of 172.30. In 2018, he drilled 357 runs at a strike rate of nearly 190. His first and only century of the league came in 2024 when he ended up with 488 runs at a strike rate of 180.74.

Narine has overall picked up 207 wickets in 200 innings at an average of 25.41 and a jaw-dropping economy rate of 6.78, with the best bowling figures of 5/19 in an innings.

#2 Jasprit Bumrah (Mumbai Indians)-

Getting Jasprit Bumrah into the side for the Mumbai franchise made a massive difference, not only for the side in the IPL but also for the Indian side in international cricket. His first wicket of the event was Virat Kohli in 2013. In his first three seasons between 2013 and 2015, he picked up only 11 wickets in 17 innings.

Bumrah’s first breakthrough season with the ball came in 2016 when he collected 15 wickets in 14 innings at an economy rate of 7.80. He followed it up with 20 wickets in 16 innings at an economy rate of 7.41, along with 17 and 19 scalps respectively in the next two seasons.

When they won their fifth title of the league, the Indian pacer ended up as the leading wicket-taker with 27 scalps at a superb economy rate of 6.73 and an average of under 15. His worst came in the recent season when he could collect only four wickets in 13 innings at an average of more than 100, an economy rate of 8.36 and a strike rate of 73.5.

#1 Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bengaluru)-

In the very first season of the IPL in 2008, the Delhi Capitals (DC) were given the choice to pick between Virat Kohli and Pradeep Sangwan as the local player, and they went for the left-arm pacer. Kohli made his debut for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), and the rest is history.

Kohli’s first season of the IPL came in 2007/08 when he made 165 runs at a strike rate of 105.09. That was a terrible season for him. After a couple of decent seasons, his breakthrough edition came in 2011 when he smashed 557 runs in 16 innings at a strike rate of 121.08.

In 2013, he smashed 634 runs in just 16 innings at a strike rate of 138.73 with the help of six half-centuries. But that was literally nothing before his record-breaking 2016 campaign, when he ended up with 973 runs, the most by any batter in one IPL edition, shouldering seven fifties and four centuries in 16 innings. Kohli has crossed the 300-run mark in every IPL season since 2009/10. That speaks to his incredible consistency with the bat.

When RCB won their maiden title in 2025, he smacked 657 runs in 15 innings at a strike rate of nearly 145 with eight fifties, while in 2026, he drilled 675 runs at a strike rate of 165.84, thanks to his five fifties and one century. He remains the only player of the league to play the first and the most recent season for the same franchise.
