Watch: Police handcuff Brydon Carse outside Derby nightclub as England launch investigation
Brydon Carse was seen handcuffed by police outside a Derby nightclub, prompting the ECB to launch an official investigation ahead of the second Test against Pakistan. Here's what's known so far

The England Cricket Board (ECB) has launched an investigation after a video showed their fast bowler, Brydon Carse, in handcuffs, being led away from a nightclub in Derby by the police. It’s the latest inclusion of an embarrassing episode involving cricket over the last 48 weeks and will again raise questions over their relationship with alcohol.
Carse is part of the squad for the first couple of Test matches against Pakistan but was released to play in the County Championship for Durham after he missed out on the final XI’s selection, as he smashed 26 runs and ended with figures of 2/82 in the match against Derbyshire.

A video was circulated on social media platforms on August 23 when Carse was surrounded by officers with his arms behind his back in handcuffs, as he was speaking to his England and Durham teammate, Matthew Potts. Ben Stokes was also seen in the background of the video.

“We are aware of an incident which is reported to have taken place in Derby last night, and are currently investigating. We will provide a further update when possible.” The ECB stated.
Carse was England’s leading wicket-taker during their away Ashes 2025/26 but hasn’t played a single international game this summer. He missed the New Zealand Test due to injury before featuring in the Hundred 2026 for the Sunrisers Leeds and was named in the Test squad against Pakistan after he proved his fitness.
Carse joins a growing list of England players involved in late-night incidents
Carse was due to link up with the Test squad in London ahead of their two training days. He wasn’t on international duty at the time of the incident but is a centrally-contracted player. The incident will again raise questions about the curfews and players’ relationship with alcohol and will continue to be asked for the rest of the summer.
Stokes retired from international cricket after he was banned from featuring in a Test along with Gus Atkinson after their alcohol incident post the win at Lord’s against the Kiwis. He denied that the England side had a drinking problem, but reckoned that the game has a culture and is connected with alcohol.
