India received a massive blow in the evening session of the second Test match of the two-match series between Sri Lanka and India at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo when their wicket-keeper batter, Rishabh Pant, left the field with an injured wrist after failing to connect with a short ball.
India’s captain, Shubman Gill, won the toss and decided to bat on a surface that was expected to break down towards the end of the third day, creating pressure on the bowlers to batters in facing the spinners. They won the opening game by 165 runs at the Galle Cricket Club.

It was the first delivery of the 58th over of the game. Lahiru Kumara banged one in short as Pant went for the pull shot but managed to glove it at the end. The ball dribbled down the leg side towards the wicket-keeper as Pant looked in immediate discomfort and appeared to have taken a blow on the wrist bone.

The physio rushed out with an ice pack to prevent the swelling. However, after a lengthy delay, the tape was applied to Pant’s wrist before being removed. The umpire then checked in with him as the batter was forced to walk off on retired hurt.

Ravindra Jadeja came out to replace him. It had been a tough period for Pant, who has been troubled by the number of injuries in recent times.

India lost both their opening batter, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal, in the morning session of the contest. The latter smashed 45 runs off 53 balls with the help of nine boundaries. Their number three, Devdutt Padikkla, fresh from his 167 in the first innings at Galle, continued his dominance with another half-century with the bat.
Their captain Gill also celebrated a fine half-century with the bat, having collected six boundaries before being dismissed by Asitha Fernando. Pant, who smashed a thrilling fifty in the previous game, was retired out, which could make a massive difference in the game for the visitors.
