The left-handed young opening batter of the Indian side, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, failed in the first innings of the Duleep Trophy 2026 for the East Zone as they met the North East Zone in the quarter-final at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground 2 in Bengaluru. It has been a vital competition for the southpaw to showcase his talent against the red ball.
Vaibhav has already cracked the shortest format of the game at an age of just 15. Having impressed in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 for the Rajasthan Royals (RR) with 776 runs in 16 innings at an average of 48.50 thanks to five fifties and one century, the youngster earned the chance to represent India in the T20Is.

All eyes were on Sooryavanshi, who opened the batting with Abhimanyu Easwaran. Bishworjit Konthoujam went for the short delivery on the body of the youngster, who timed it into the leg side and found the gap for a boundary. The fielder tried to stop it but had no chance.

The pacer followed it up with a full delivery as Sooryavanshi was prepared and threw his bat at it to get another boundary through the covers. Konthoujam, however, made a slight adjustment to his length on the final delivery of the over.

He pulled it a little bit and kept the line on the fourth stump. Sooryavanshi tried to go for the drive from the back foot but failed to keep it on the ground. He was also a tad late on the shot as the outside edge ended up in the hands of the gully fielder. He went back to the hut for eight runs.
East Zone openers under the pump as North East Zone strike early on Day 1 in Bengaluru
After the dismissal of Sooryavanshi, the veteran and successful campaigner of the domestic format, Easwaran also made his way back into the hut for 15 runs off 20 balls. However, Kumar Kushagra and Sudip Kumar Gharami settled the ship with a 92-run stand for the third wicket as the former smashed 55 runs off 65 balls with the help of nine boundaries.
Gharami remained unbeaten on 64 runs off 89 balls, thanks to his 12 boundaries. However, their lower order failed too as they slipped to 138/5 from being at 117/2, having lost three wickets for just 21 runs in 31 balls.
