In a nail-biting encounter that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the final delivery, Royal Challengers Bangalore clinched a thrilling victory over UP Warriorz by a slender margin of two runs in the inaugural match of the 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL) at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.

The standout performer of the evening for RCB was Sobhana Asha, who turned the tide in her team’s favor by scalping five wickets, including three pivotal ones in the crucial 17th over, which significantly dented UP’s momentum.

The second fixture of WPL 2024, witnessed by a capacity crowd, mirrored the dramatic conclusion of the opening encounter, as it culminated in a last-ball finish akin to Mumbai Indians’ triumph over the Delhi Capitals.

In pursuit of a target of 158 runs, UP found themselves needing 11 runs off the final nine deliveries, courtesy of a resilient partnership between Grace Harris (38) and Shweta Sehrawat (31), which propelled the team from a precarious position of 49/3 to a more promising 125/4. However, despite Poonam Khemnar’s late flurry of boundaries that brought UP tantalizingly close, their innings unravelled in the dying moments.

Prior to that, it was Richa Ghosh (62 runs) and S Meghana (53) who spearheaded Royal Challengers Bangalore’s recovery, rescuing the team from a precarious situation at 54/3 after the early dismissals of Smriti Mandhana, Sophie Devine, and Ellyse Perry, and guiding them to a competitive total of 158.
