The Delhi Capitals asserted their dominance in the Women’s Premier League with a commanding 25-run victory over the Gujarat Giants on Sunday. Led by captain Meg Lanning, Delhi delivered a clinical performance, defending their total of 164 runs by restricting Gujarat to just 138/8 in their 20 overs. Spinners Jess Jonassen and Radha Yadav played pivotal roles, sharing six wickets between them and thwarting Gujarat’s batting efforts at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Despite a valiant innings of 40 runs from Ashleigh Gardner, Gujarat struggled to maintain momentum throughout their chase. Their fielding lapses, marked by dropped catches and missed opportunities, further compounded their challenges.

Meanwhile, Delhi faced their own setbacks, including a stutter in their batting after a strong start provided by Lanning and others. However, contributions from players like Annabel Sutherland, who added crucial runs to Delhi’s total, ultimately proved decisive in securing their victory.

Delhi Capitals Dominate Gujarat Giants to Secure Top Spot

In the first innings, Delhi’s batting order stumbled after Lanning’s solid foundation, managing to post 163 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. While early brilliance from top-order batswomen hinted at a formidable total, Gujarat’s bowlers, particularly Meghna Singh, who claimed four wickets, posed significant challenges.

Singh’s remarkable performance, making her the first Indian pacer in WPL history to achieve such a feat in a single game, showcased Gujarat’s resilience. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome Delhi’s determined efforts, as the Capitals emerged victorious, claiming the top spot in the league table. As Delhi bids adieu to the Chinnaswamy Stadium, they anticipate continuing their winning momentum on home turf in Delhi.
