The World Cup is four games old but things could well be getting started here in Chepauk with what could be the first full house of the tournament with India kicking off their tournament. They are the home favorites and against them is a side that wins World Cups for fun. Incidentally, this will not be the first time both teams face off in Chennai during a World Cup. The same two sides were involved in a thriller in the 1987 World Cup which saw Australia triumph by one run.
Spin will be a challenge for both teams. Australia will have the additional challenge of facing Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, who have tormented them so many times in the longer format over the last decade. The pair know Chennai so well in particular and all that experience is going to come in use. Australia though will know about India’s struggles with spin as well and will ensure they give a hard time back. The two sides faced off in the same ground in March when Adam Zampa spun India out of the game, which will give Australia a lot of confidence now.
Date: October 8th, 2023
Time: 2:00 PM IST
Venue: Chennai
The weather looks pretty clear for the upcoming fixture.
Batting first tends to be the better option in Chennai with the track slowing down as the game progresses. A lot of spin will be on offer as the ball gets older prompting both teams to stock up on their spin attack.

Glenn Maxwell
With Australia light on front-line spin options, Glenn Maxwell will be a lot more important with the ball. He took a four-wicket haul against India not too long ago and will know that they are not the happiest against spin bowling. With the bat too he will have a big role to play considering he is one of their better players in spin bowling and has a lot of experience playing in India.
Mohammad Siraj
From being a run-machine once Mohammad Siraj has come a long way to make it to his first World Cup. He has a job on hand though. He comes in as a very exciting bowler with his ability to pick wickets up front and India will be relying on that heavily with the form David Warner and Mitchell Marsh are in.
Australia can be a completely different team in World Cups and look a very scary prospect. However, home advantage, experienced spinners and Chennai conditions could put India as favorites despite the result both sides finished with after their game in March.
