It was the fourth match of the ICC ODI World Cup 2003 between Australia and Pakistan at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. The former was under pressure with four down for 86 runs when Jimmy Maher was dismissed. They needed someone to hold one end and keep the pace of the run throughout the innings.

Andrew Symonds shouldered the responsibility and remained unbeaten on 143 runs off just 125 balls at a strike rate of 114.40, thanks to his 18 boundaries and two sixes. Australia, based on a few more contributions from the lower order, ended up with 310/8 in their allotted 50 overs and earned the win by 82 runs as Pakistan was bundled out for 228.

It was the quarter-final of the ODI World Cup 2015 between West Indies and New Zealand at the Sky Stadium in Wellington where the Kiwi opener, Martin Guptill, blasted a firing knock of unbeaten 237 runs off just 163 balls at a strike rate of 145.40, thanks to 24 boundaries and 11 sixes as the Blackcaps ended up with 393/6 in their allotted 50 overs. 

The Caribbean side, in reply, went with an aggressive route and was bundled out for just 250 runs in 30.3 overs and lost the contest by 143 runs. Trent Boult finished with 4/44 in 10 overs at an economy rate of 4.40.

#8 Viv Richards- 181 vs Sri Lanka- 1987 Reliance World Cup-

During the 1987 Reliance World Cup between Sri Lanka and West Indies at the National Stadium in Karachi, Sir Viv Richards played one of the best knocks of the 50-over format. After being reduced to 45/2, Richards and Desmond Haynes put on an 182-run stand for the third wicket.

Even though Haynes nailed 105 runs, Richard’s cracking knock of 181 runs off 125 balls, thanks to 16 boundaries and seven sixes at a strike rate of 144.80, grabbed the headline as they posted 360/4 in 50 overs. The Asian opposition, in reply, was reduced to 169/4 in 50 overs as the Caribbean side earned the win by 191 runs.

It was the final of the ODI World Cup 2007 at the Kensington Oval in Barbados when Australia ended up with 281 runs for the loss of four wickets in the restricted 38-over clash. That was powered by the 172-run opening stand between Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden, where the opening batter clubbed 149 runs off 104 balls at a strike rate of 143.27, with 13 boundaries and eight sixes.

Sri Lanka, in reply, was restricted to 215/8 and lost the encounter by 53 runs in the DLS method. The 116-run second-wicket stand between Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara couldn’t get them over the winning line.

Saeed Anwar’s fine knock of 101 runs off 126 balls with the help of seven boundaries set the platform for them to finish with 273 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their allotted 50 overs.

The Sourav Ganguly-led side, in reply, completed the chase with 28 balls to spare by six wickets, with Sachin Tendulkar playing an eye-catching knock of 98 runs off 75 balls at a strike rate of 130.67, shouldering on 12 boundaries and one six. Even Yuvraj Singh remained undefeated on 50 runs off 53 balls.

#5 Virat Kohli- 117 vs New Zealand- ODI WC 2023 semi-final-

During the semifinal clash of the ODI World Cup 2023 between India and New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, India posted 397 runs for the loss of four wickets in their allotted 50 overs, thanks to the two centuries from Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer. The former celebrated his 50th century in ODIs through the knock and ended up with 117 runs off 113 balls, at a strike rate of 103.54 with nine boundaries and a couple of sixes. 

In reply, the Kiwis were bundled out for 327 and lost the contest by 70 runs. Daryl Mitchell played a sensational knock of 134 runs off 119 balls, shouldering on nine boundaries and seven sixes, but Mohammed Shami’s 7/57 gave them the win by 70 runs.

During the ODI World Cup 2019 final at Lord’s in London between England and New Zealand, the Blackcaps was restricted to 241 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their allotted 50 overs. England, limping at 86/4 during the chase, needed someone to play an aggressive knock with the flurry of boundaries along with holding one end. 

Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler partnered each other for a 110-run stand for the fifth wicket, and the left-handed batter clubbed a dashing unbeaten knock of 84 runs off 98 balls, shouldering on five boundaries and two sixes. The game ended in a draw before the hosts won their very first title in the super over boundary count.

In the Wills World Cup 1996 final between Australia and Sri Lanka at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, Australia was restricted to 241 runs for the loss of seven wickets as Mark Taylor was the only half-centurion of the batting department. Aravinda de Silva ended with three wickets, including Taylor, Ricky Ponting and Ian Healy.

In reply, Sri Lanka was under tremendous pressure at 23/2 before de Silva smashed an unbeaten knock of 107 runs off 124 balls with 13 boundaries to get themselves over the winning line by seven wickets with 22 balls to spare.

#2 Kapil Dev- 175* vs Zimbabwe- 1983 Prudential Cup-

Due to the strike in England, the game between India and Zimbabwe in the 1983 Prudential Cup wasn’t televised at the Nevil Ground in Tunbridge Wells. India, batting first, were restricted to 17/5 when their captain, Kapil Dev, walked into the middle, leaving soap on his body from the mid-shower as he told in several stories.

What Kapil did next is extra-ordinary. He blasted an unbeaten knock of 175 runs off 138 balls with 16 boundaries and six sixes to shoulder them to 266/8 in the 60 overs. Zimbabwe, in the chase, were blown away for 235, losing the contest by 31 runs.

Not only the World Cup, Glenn Maxwell’s 201* remains one of the best ODI knocks of the game. In a game where Australia were expected to earn an easy win over Afghanistan during the ODI World Cup 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, they found themselves 91/7 in the 292-run chase.

Only a personal brilliance from any player could have saved them, and Maxwell took the responsibility. He put up a 202-run stand with Pat Cummins, where the latter managed 12* off 68 balls. The Victorian beat the cramps and remained unbeaten on 201 runs with 21 boundaries and 10 sixes off 127 balls to deliver them the victory by three wickets.
