Strong start, shocking exit — 3 brutal reasons Delhi Capitals crashed out of IPL 2026

Delhi Capitals looked like strong playoff contenders early in IPL 2026, but their campaign collapsed badly in the second half of the season. Poor death bowling, inconsistent performances from key players, and costly defeats in crucial matches ultimately ended DC’s playoff hopes.

Delhi Capitals were officially knocked out of the IPL 2026 playoff race after Punjab Kings defeated Lucknow Super Giants on May 23. Despite several brilliant performances from KL Rahul throughout the season, DC failed to secure a top-four finish and ended their campaign in sixth place with 14 points from 14 matches. It marked yet another disappointing season for the franchise, whose last playoff qualification came back in 2021.

The Axar Patel-led side ended their IPL 2026 journey on a positive note by defeating Kolkata Knight Riders by 40 runs in their final league-stage match at Eden Gardens on Sunday, May 24. Batting first, Delhi posted 203 runs, powered by a quickfire 60 off 30 balls from KL Rahul. However, the victory came too late to keep their playoff hopes alive, as other results had already gone against them earlier in the tournament.

Ahead of IPL 2026, Delhi Capitals were considered one of the strongest squads on paper and were widely expected to qualify for the playoffs. However, inconsistent performances from key players, questionable captaincy decisions, and costly defeats in crucial matches ultimately derailed their campaign. Narrow losses, including a one-run defeat to Gujarat Titans and their failure to defend 264 runs against Punjab Kings, proved especially damaging. As DC once again missed out on the playoffs, we take a closer look at the three major reasons behind their disappointing IPL 2026 elimination.

1.DC's batting collapse at critical moments cost them 4 match-winning positions

Delhi Capitals had the batting lineup to win matches — but when it mattered most, they collapsed. In at least 4 games this season, DC were in a winning position but could not hold it together with the bat. The team simply did not have enough contributors beyond one man.

That one man was KL Rahul. He scored 593 runs in 14 innings at an average of 45.61 and a strike rate of 174.41, with five fifties and one hundred. But no other DC batter even crossed 300 runs — making Rahul's brilliance feel lonely and, ultimately, not enough.

The rest of the batting order showed up occasionally but never consistently. Pathum Nissanka (278), Tristan Stubbs (275), Sameer Rizvi (252), Nitish Rana (225), and David Miller (211) all had their moments — but could never deliver back-to-back when DC needed it most. Worse, impactful players like Ashutosh Sharma (181.90 SR in 8 games), Abishek Porel (108 runs in 4 games), and Prithvi Shaw (0 games) were either underused or completely ignored — leaving DC's batting collapse not just inevitable, but self-inflicted.

2. Poor death bowling & no plan B: How DC's bowling attack fell apart in 2026

Delhi Capitals struggled badly with the ball throughout IPL 2026, and their weak bowling performances became one of the biggest reasons behind their playoff exit. Apart from captain Axar Patel, no Indian bowler in the squad managed to take more than 10 wickets during the season. The lack of consistency, especially in the death overs, repeatedly hurt DC in crucial matches.

Senior spinner Kuldeep Yadav endured a disappointing campaign, picking up just 10 wickets in 11 innings while conceding runs at an economy rate of 10.29. DC’s expensive signing Auqib Nabi also failed to justify his price tag after being bought for ₹8.40 crore. The pacer featured in five matches but could not take a single wicket and leaked runs at an economy of 11.46. Meanwhile, Mukesh Kumar once again struggled for control, taking only six wickets in 10 games while conceding more than 11 runs per over.

Left-arm seamer T Natarajan also failed to deliver the impact DC expected from him. He managed only five wickets in 10 innings and had an economy rate of 11.18. Overall, Delhi Capitals’ Indian bowling core failed to step up when the team needed them most. Their inability to contain runs or pick up wickets in pressure situations exposed the lack of a reliable backup plan, and it ultimately played a major role in DC missing out on the IPL 2026 playoffs.

3. Leadership calls that backfired — did DC's captaincy crisis seal their fate?

Axar Patel had a difficult season both as a captain and as a player. With the ball, he picked up 11 wickets in 13 innings at an economy of 8.18 — decent, but not match-winning. With the bat, the numbers were worse. He scored just 173 runs in 11 innings at an average of 19.22 and a strike rate of 131.06. What makes it more concerning is that 129 of those runs came in his last three innings — meaning he contributed just 44 runs in his first eight outings when DC needed momentum the most.

The captaincy decisions raised even more questions. In Dharamsala against Punjab Kings, Axar chose not to bowl himself — a call that left many puzzled given he is DC's most trusted spin option. Against SunRisers Hyderabad, he handed part-timer Nitish Rana four overs, who went for 55 runs. Meanwhile, Axar bowled just two overs himself, finishing with 1/23. These were not one-off mistakes — they were a pattern of tactical misjudgements that opposition teams began to exploit.

When your captain is low on form and confidence, it shows in the decisions he makes on the field. Axar is a match-winner on his day — nobody doubts that. But in IPL 2026, he never found his rhythm with bat, ball, or tactics at the same time. For a team already short on match-winners, that was a luxury DC simply could not afford.

A captain's bad season can be absorbed — but not when it comes with bad decisions. For DC in IPL 2026, Axar's struggles on and off the field became one of the season's defining stories, and a key reason why the playoffs remained out of reach once again.
