5 losses to open the tournament in 2014, proceeded to the Mumbai Indians, winning 7 out of the next 9 to qualify for the playoffs. In 2015, the Mumbai Indians won the title despite winning just one of their first six games. More recently, in 2025, the Mumbai Indians have made the playoffs after losing five out of their first six games.

If starting slow and coming back to touch is an art, the Mumbai Indians are among the greatest artists around. This time around, though, they have their share of challenges. The league has changed, and the Mumbai Indians, along with their rivals, the Chennai Super Kings, are facing the heat for not evolving fast enough.

Mumbai Indians, with a bowling attack possessing Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult, are among the poorest in both the powerplay and the death, with their economy rate the worst among the ten teams. Jasprit Bumrah, in particular, has struggled heavily. Their captain, Hardik Pandya, as well, is having a tough time finding momentum while the batting is showing brilliance, but is not backed up by the bowlers enough.

The batting brilliance, though, struggles to find consistency with Suryakumar in scratchy form, and Rohit Sharma is injured. Hope, though, is not gone yet for the Mumbai Indians. The resurgence usually begins with a Suryakumar Yadav special, and Mumbai fans will be hoping for the same against the Chennai Super Kings. They face a struggling unit as well, and the rivalry match could well decide which one manages to hang on to the tournament and which one gets closer to elimination.

For the Mumbai Indians, there is a reason to say they are still around with a chance. The second half is where Suryakumar is likely to find form, and Mumbai's record at the Chepauk is a pretty solid one as well, having gotten the better of Chennai Super Kings on a few occasions on their own turf. For the resurgence, though quiet a few things need to go their way.

The IPL, though, is a long tournament, and the peak of Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah should not be too far. Facing favorite opponents, May 2nd could well be the turnaround they are looking for as a classic awaits yet again in Chepauk. Two sides are looking for revival, with the Mumbai Indians likely to back themselves as favorites, hoping their bowling attack finds its length and ability once again.
