India defeated Sri Lanka in the Women's Asia Cup 2026 final in Dubai, but the official trophy presentation did not take place after the Indian team refused to accept the trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Mohsin Naqvi. Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma helped India post 183/5, before the bowlers dismissed Sri Lanka for 111 to secure India's record-extending eighth Asia Cup title.

Naqvi, who is also Pakistan's interior minister and PCB chief, was present at the stadium for the final. He later presented the runners-up cheque to Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu, but the Indian players did not take part in the official trophy ceremony. The broadcast ended after Athapaththu's interaction with former Sri Lanka cricketer Farvez Maharoof, while Naqvi was later seen leaving the field with other ACC officials.

The latest incident has brought back memories of a similar controversy involving the Indian men's team during the 2025 Asia Cup. After defeating Pakistan, India reportedly requested that an Emirates Cricket Board official present the trophy instead of Naqvi, but the request was rejected. The Indian team eventually left without receiving the trophy, and the women's team's decision in Dubai has now renewed the debate among Indian cricket fans.

Presentation delayed over an hour as BCCI pushed for another ACC official to present it

The Women's Asia Cup 2026 trophy presentation ended after the medal distribution ceremony. Reports on social media claimed that BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla tried to calm the situation, but Mohsin Naqvi remained firm on presenting the trophy himself. The Indian team refused to accept the trophy from him, leading to the ceremony ending without the winners receiving the silverware.

The controversy has also raised questions about the traditional trophy presentation process. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia questioned the decision to change the usual practice after the Indian women's team refused to accept the trophy from ACC president Mohsin Naqvi. The match officials were first presented with their mementoes, followed by Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu and her teammates receiving their runners-up medals. Athapaththu later collected the runners-up cheque from Naqvi.

The broadcast ended after Athapaththu's interview, without showing the Indian players receiving their winners' medals or the Asia Cup trophy. India head coach Amol Muzumdar said the team supported the BCCI's decision not to accept the trophy from Naqvi. He added that the team considered the tournament complete after being crowned champions.
