IPL 2026: The Two Blues of Hardik Pandya
Hardik Pandya puzzles with his contrasting returns while playing for Mumbai and for India

When Hardik Pandya shows up in the Indian jersey, he is at the thick of it. He takes the tough overs with the ball, is in the bowler's ear giving them moral support, and with the bat, he is the clutch man in the side. Hardik Pandya, the Indian cricketer, is definitely India's everything man with momentum-shifting knocks and spells.
Hardik Pandya, the Mumbai Indians all-rounder, though, is a player with diminishing value. This season, Hardik Pandya has made 97 runs, striking at 140, and has only 3 wickets at an economy of 12.67. He has struggled to make an impact with both bat and ball, and the lack of inspiration from Hardik Pandya is a telling factor of the Mumbai Indians' story so far.
Just a month ago, Hardik Pandya was the one who gave just nine runs in the penultimate over of the World Cup Semi-Final. It was a game where nearly 500 runs were scored, and Hardik Pandya, with 39 to defend in two overs, gave just nine to kill the chase for good. In 2024 as well, with 27 needed off 24, it was Pandya who dismissed Klaasen and then went on to defend 16 in the Final over. Clutch moment, and Pandya is definitely right in the middle of the action.
For India, this year, Hardik Pandya has bowled 10 overs in the death, while he has only had two so far in the IPL. His reluctance to bowl in the death overs was evident against CSK. Bowling in the powerplay, Sanju Samson got the better of him, and that influenced him to give the ball to the debutant, Krish Bhagat, rather than facing Sanju Samson himself.

IPL form, or lack of it, has been evident for Hardik Pandya since 2024. In 2022 and 2023, when he was with the Titans, he would bat higher up the order. Now, for the Mumbai Indians, he has pushed himself back into the finishers' spot, improving his strike-rate but struggling to make a lasting impact with very few of his special match-winning performances. His bowling has been on the wane too in the IPL, with his economy falling from 8.1 in 2022-2023 to 10.8 in the last three seasons.
Hardik Pandya has shown flashes of his true self this season. He had a good 40 against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. His IPL form, though, remains a puzzle given his brilliance in the Indian blue many times over the last few months. There is a lot more inconsistency around him at the Mumbai Indians, and the weight of captaincy could well be a factor as well. For Hardik Pandya, though, the Mumbai Indians blue does not feel as sweet as the India blue at the moment, a good sign with his commitment towards the national team, but not a great sight for the fans of the Mumbai Indians.
