Virat Kohli vs Sachin Tendulkar — who is the greater batter? The numbers, the context and the verdict most people won't accept

Virat Kohli vs Sachin Tendulkar: who is the greater batter? Runs, centuries, averages, and clutch chase numbers compared side by side, plus the context behind the numbers and the verdict most fans refuse to accept — see inside.

Virat Kohli vs Sachin Tendulkar batting stats comparison — international runs, centuries, average

Sachin Tendulkar ended his career with 100 international centuries, while Virat Kohli has 85 and is still playing the ODI format, having already retired from the T20I and Test formats of the game. That is the only gap in the entire argument- and it’s also the most misleading way to frame it between the two giants of the game.

If your answer to the ‘greatest all-time’ batter debate begins and ends with the number of centuries, you have oversimplified one of cricket’s most complex and million-dollar comparisons. For any person, younger or older, boy or girl, associated with the game or not, has the same debate in mind, perhaps on every single day of their life.

Greatness isn’t decided by a single statistic. It’s shaped by the era one plays in, the bowlers they face, the pressure they absorb on different occasions with the responsibility on their shoulder, the matches they win, and the consistency they maintain over the years.

Generally, even if a batter scores fewer runs, they can still have a stronger peak. A player with fewer centuries can have a greater impact in difficult situations. There is no such guarantee in it. After all, numbers rarely explain the full story on their own.

Sachin spent 24 years carrying the expectations of a cricket-obsessed nation, often against some of the greatest bowling attacks the game has ever seen.

But Kohli’s case isn’t lighter at all. He has dominated an era of relentless international cricket, where the games come thick and fast. He redefined chasing in the 50-over format, which shows his power to tolerate pressure at an extreme level along with setting new standards for consistency, fitness, and all-format excellence.

So, who is the greater batter? The debate isn’t just around 100 vs 85. There is a need to move beyond headline statistics and examine the numbers in context.

The numbers that favour Sachin — and why they are harder to ignore than Kohli fans admit

Tendulkar is overall the leading run-getter across the three formats of the game. The right-handed Indian batter sits at the top with 34357 runs in 782 innings at an average of 48.52 and a strike rate of more than 67.58 with the help of 164 half-centuries and 100 centuries at the best score of unbeaten 248 runs.

When it comes to the ODI format, Tendulkar has smashed 6976 runs in 160 innings at home. He averaged 48.11 in the batting department with a strike rate of 88.40, celebrating 38 half-centuries and 22 centuries in this order. Away from home, he has cracked 11450 runs in 292 innings at 43.05 with 29 centuries and 58 half-centuries.

In Test matches, the Mumbai-born has done equally well in both home and away games. In India, he has nailed 7216 runs in 153 innings at 52.67 with 22 centuries and 32 fifties, while away from home, he has smacked 8705 runs at 54.75, celebrating 29 centuries and 36 fifties.

The numbers that favour Kohli — and why average and strike rate matter more than anyone admits

Kohli, on the other hand, is the second highest run-getter in international cricket. The right-handed batter clubbed 28215 runs in 626 innings at an average of 52.73 and a strike rate of around 80 with the help of 146 fifties and 85 centuries at the best score of unbeaten 254 runs.

Kohli retired as the fourth leading run-getter in Tests for India, having scored 9230 runs in 210 innings at an average of 46.85, thanks to 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries at the best score of 254*. In T20Is, he drilled 4188 runs at an average of 48.69 and a strike rate of 137.04 with 38 fifties and one century, including the T20 World Cup in 2024.

In ODIs, Kohli’s numbers are second to none. He is the second leading run-getter in the 50-over format after Tendulkar but at a better average, strike rate, and more centuries. His 14797 runs came in 299 innings at 58.71 with 54 centuries and is well ahead of Rohit Sharma’s 11720 runs at the third position.

The Delhi-born managed 6867 runs in ODIs at home at an average of 62.43 with the help of 27 centuries and 37 fifties. Meanwhile, away from home, he cracked 7930 runs at 55.85 with the help of 27 centuries and 41 fifties.

Kohli has a different-looking home-away record in the longest format. In India, he collected 4336 runs in 87 innings at 55.59, shouldering 14 centuries and 13 fifties. However, away from home, his average drops to 41.13 for 4894 runs.

Kohli’s T20I record is far better than Sachin's, who wasn’t part of it for most of his career. The former’s conversion rate of fifties to hundreds is the best in the game. The modern game is faster, and bowlers are more skilled at the death overs due to the T20Is, and that shows how unbelievable the records Kohli holds.

The era argument — why comparing across generations is fundamentally unfair, and we should do it anyway

Tendulkar’s peak in the ODIs came between 1994 and 2003 when he started to open the batting. In this period, he slammed 11006 runs in 250 innings at 48.48, thanks to his 36 centuries and 52 fifties.

Meanwhile, Kohli’s peak in the 50-over format came between 2016 and 2019. And that peak was near the height of Mount Everest. In just 75 innings, he smashed 4778 runs at 80.98, thanks to 20 centuries and 21 fifties.

In Tests, Tendulkar has two peaks. The first one was between 1997 and 2002 when he grabbed 5705 runs in 99 innings at 63.38 with 21 centuries and 20 fifties. Later, between 2008 and 2011, the former captain notched up 3922 Test runs at nearly 60 with 14 centuries and 16 fifties.

Subsequently, Kohli’s red-ball peak was between 2016 and 2019, just like his 50-over peak. In this period, he nailed 4208 runs in 69 innings at an average of 66.79 with 10 fifties and 16 centuries.

Undoubtedly, Tendulkar faced some strong bowlers across formats in his career, including Waqar Younis, Wasim Akram, Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Curtly Ambrose, Muttiah Muralitharan, and so on. Kohli, meanwhile, came up against James Anderson, Kagiso Rabada, Pat Cummins, and Dale Steyn.

Tendulkar, having played for 24 years, faced many bowlers towards their peak and end of their career. Meanwhile, whichever bowler Kohli faced was mostly towards their peak.

The one format where the debate is already settled — and it is not the one you expect

Tendulkar, in Test cricket, leads the volume with several match-winning knocks. He has an average of 55 against that golden era of the Australian side with five centuries, while against West Indies, he has 1630 runs at 54.33 and an average of 60.45 against Sri Lanka

On the other hand, Kohli handled India’s Test performance when they were down and out. He also impressed with an average of 54.15 against the Proteas and 43.76 against the Australian side. He leads Tendulkar in average and strike rate as he is statistically superior by every modern metric.

But the discussion is settled in ODIs. Tendulkar hasn’t done that well, despite playing for such a long time in the 50-over format, with an average of over 50 only against West Indies in a significant number of innings.

Is there anyone better than Kohli in ODIs? The answer is simply no. He understood the ruth and value of the format. He is ahead of every other player, featuring in this format at any stage of their career in the game.

The verdict — and why it depends entirely on what you think cricket is for

If cricket is about volume and longevity — Sachin. If cricket is about efficiency and dominance — Kohli. This is very clear from the game’s point of view.

Kohli’s record in ODI chases is second to none, having drilled 8420 runs at an average of 65.78 with 29 centuries and 44 half-centuries at the best score of 183. This is where he taught the world a new skill in the game.

Even in ODI World Cups, Kohli has 1795 runs in 37 innings at an average of 59.83 with five centuries and 12 fifties, while Tendulkar has 2278 runs at 56.95 with six centuries and 15 fifties. The record was close until Kohli became the only batter to collect 750+ runs in a single edition of the event as he achieved the mark in 2023.

If Kohli plays three more years at his current average, this debate will no longer be a debate. As of now, the debate continues with Tendulkar and Kohli staying on an equal parameter- no one ahead, no one behind.
