Pakistan, losing their opening batter Azan Awais, didn’t make a strong start to the three-match Test series against England, with the opening game taking place at Leeds. They came off the 1-1 drawn series result against the West Indies, where they won the second game at the Port of Spain. 

Meanwhile, England, under their new leader Joe Root, start their new journey in the five-day format after the end of the Bazball approach as their former captain, Ben Stokes, retired, with head coach Brendon McCullum getting sacked from the position.

England won the toss and decided to bowl first under overcast conditions as Pakistan’s standing captain, Salman Agha, in the absence of Babar Azam, reckoned that they would have batted first anyway on the surface, which looked flat and good for batting despite the tough conditions.

Ollie Robinson was given the new ball as he picked up the wicket on the very first ball of the match. It was the wobble seam nip-backer from the tall bowler. It didn’t have great bounce, but the ball moved in sharply and pinned Awais in front of the off-stump.

The left-handed batter played all around it, and only a contact could have saved the batter. But he sat back and didn’t expect the ball to make such a massive movement and failed to get the bat on the ball. They lost the review as the opener went back to the dressing room for a golden duck.

Pakistan under early pressure after a nightmare start at Headingley

Pakistan continued to struggle as Shan Masood also failed to make an impact in the encounter. The change of angle from Robinson worked out. He switched to over the wicket and got the ball to tail in late from a good length.

It pitched in line and struck Masood on the inside part of the front pad before deflecting off the back pad. The height was never a question as the southpaw went back to the pavilion for five runs.
