21 runs was the average opening partnership for the Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025. They were among the lowest scorers in the powerplay and for a side that prides itself on stability, CSK went with five different openers for the entire season. A collapse in Chennai against Kolkata saw CSK rip their papers apart and start fresh. They let go of their stalwarts in Devon Conway and Matheesha Pathirana and their very own blood in Ravindra Jadeja.

Firepower was added with Sanju Samson coming in, and young talent was sought out. Chennai Super Kings did all they could to change their template, only for another collapse to derail the. 103 all-out was the template changer last year, and this time CSK, first game with a changed side, found themselves 6 down for 57. 100 looked unlikely until Jamie Overton played a gem to save face. The problem, though, continues to persist. Does CSK have the firepower? The names are theirs. Firepower with the bat aside, does CSK have the bowling power as well?

For a side that decided to throw experience aside, the first game showed exactly what was missing. At 3 for 19, a time when CSK would normally have a Ravindra Jadeja or another experienced head, they had youngsters negotiating Ravindra Jadeja himself. It was a tough one to watch with Jadeja ripping through the Chennai Super Kings middle-order, something he has done in yellow so many times in the past.

Assembling a line-up of six-hitters, the line-up could not adapt to a little dampness and early movement. The panic button was hit early with the impact player coming in at number 5 in the first innings of the game. The side, though, looked in scrambles, with batters looking to hit out without managing to get enough on the ball.

There was some saving grace, though, with Jamie Overton and Karthik Sharma showing some composure with the bat. That is about as good as it gets, though, with CSK's top order looking a sorry sight. For the Super Kings, they now look to walk on a long rebuilding road as they find themselves. The franchise has run its race, and last year was a disaster. The first game was the end of that era, though with CSK playing a game that did not have the names Suresh Raina or MS Dhoni for the first time, and with Ravindra Jadeja in the opposite camp.

A side that revived the careers of players in their downward spiral is now on its very own downfall. The batting has potential but is not living up to expectations, while the bowling looks very light as well. For CSK fans, another long season could well be what awaits them. The Chennai Super Kings, known for so long was far from visible with panic everywhere as a 15-year-old smacked them out of the park to pile on the misery.  Where do they go from here? That remains anyone's guess, but the future does not look too bright at the moment.
