New Zealand’s journey in the 2024 T20 World Cup have been a testament to the resilience of the Blackcaps. Despite the occasional sight of teams losing consecutive matches, it’s been a stark reminder that even a team as strong as the Blackcaps can face challenges. Their first loss, a game to forget, was against Afghanistan, where they were bowled out for a double-digit score.

The misery continued with their second loss to the West Indies, where their low-scored total gave the hosts a golden chance to secure a win. This time, their top-notch bowling strategy could have contained the West Indies’ powerful batting lineup. But the other departments of the team didn’t perform up to the mark. Let’s dissect the reasons behind New Zealand’s woeful performance in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

1. Lack of in-depth batting and a bleak opening display.

The New Zealand squad has relied significantly on Finn Allen and Devon Conway. But, with both the players having been hindered and recovered from their injuries, they couldn’t provide their X-factor game with the bat. The Kiwis have been prominent for their swashbuckling batting approach, but they have yet to prove it this season.

The middle order batting comprising Kane Williamson, Glenn Philips, and Daryll Mitchell was disappointing with the bat. As a measure of change, they can try changing their opening pair or having Rachin Ravindran get promoted as one of the openers. The emerging left-hand batter can be favourable with his hitting calibres with the new ball on such tracks.

2. Sloppy display of fielding

New Zealand has been the epitome of fielding successes in the sport of cricket, with many Kiwi superstars who have created a name through their athleticism and fielding skills. But, this major T20 WC tournament season has been the opposite of a case in its fielding department. They have been horrendous in handling the ball on-field.

Be it through significant catch drops or not saving some runs through boundaries, the team has had turmoil in not restricting the batters through their bleak fielding performances; as they say, in the shortest format of the game; even one run changes the game.

3. Concerns about captaincy and team selection woes

The team has encountered several questions from critics about the team’s selection prospects and captaincy. With most key players coming back from major injuries, it is evident that lack of rest and recovery time could be one factor for them to not perform. It can be evidently seen through their game against the robust teams of the tournament.

Even the future of Kane Williamson as a captain could come under the radar, as he was able to win one (2021 World Test Championship) out of many crucial ICC tournaments and would consider a change with the intention of future planning.
