In Match 44 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eights, West Indies produced a commanding display to defeat Zimbabwe by 107 runs. The Caribbean team batted first and made an awesome total of 254 runs in just 20 overs! This is one of the largest scores ever recorded in this tournament. Things started badly for the Caribbean country as it lost two of its best batters early on. But then, thanks to some very good partnerships based on aggressive hitting as well as careful planning/strategy, they were able to rebuild their innings. The Caribbean league was able to take over the momentum of the match after about the first half of their innings.

Shimron Hetmyer led the way for the Caribbean team with an amazing performance that included scoring 85 runs in only 34 balls. The swash buckling left hand batter hit 7 fours and 7 sixes, and had a strike rate of close to 250. Rovman Powell also did a good job hitting a lot of runs quickly (59 runs) and provided help to Shimron Hetmyer by making sure that there were lots of big hits by other players, particularly Sherfane Rutherford and Romario Shepherd. Although both Richard Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani had two wickets each, too many boundaries were scored off of them. The Caribbean side raced to 55 in the powerplay (in the first 6 overs), and then managed to score at a run rate of 12.7 through to the end of the match.

Zimbabwe needed to score 255 runs to win the match, but their innings never got momentum and was never stable. They suffered early wickets, with Akeal Hosein taking out important key wickets for Zimbabwe, and Gudakesh Motie destroyed any chance of the Zimbabwe team getting back in the game with his four-wicket haul. Dion Myers and Sikandar Raza both had good efforts with skittish batting; however, consistent wicket losses negated their ability to make big runs or have a long, sustained partnership. In the end, Zimbabwe's innings lasted just 147 runs and only 17.4 overs! Zimbabwe's batting was unable to put together a score to match the Caribbean team's winning score of 255 runs.

Caribbean Dominance with Bat and Ball

West Indies’ bowling unit complemented their batting brilliance with disciplined execution. Akeal Hosein returned figures of 3/28, maintaining control through tight lines, while Motie’s 4/28 proved decisive in breaking Zimbabwe’s backbone. Matthew Forde also chipped in with two wickets, ensuring there was no late revival. The Caribbean attack struck regularly, exploiting scoreboard pressure and forcing errors from Zimbabwe’s batters throughout the chase.

The emphatic victory significantly boosted West Indies’ net run rate in the Super Eights stage and reinforced their status as strong semifinal contenders. With dominant performances in both departments, they showcased depth, balance, and composure under pressure. Zimbabwe, meanwhile, will need to regroup quickly after their unbeaten streak was halted in dramatic fashion by a clinical all-round display from the Caribbean powerhouse.
