Last year, during the Indian Premier League (IPL), Abhishek Sharma celebrated his maiden century of the event, 141 runs off just 55 balls with 14 boundaries and 10 sixes, on the same surface against the Punjab Kings, where the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) locked horns with the Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad in the ongoing edition.

When the visiting captain, Axar Patel, won the toss and decided to bowl first, he perhaps didn’t expect what was to follow in the next hour. Abhishek Sharma blew their bowlers all around the park with some fabulous hitting and quality shots.

From his very first ball of the evening, the left-handed opener looked smooth in his timing of playing the big shot, even on a surface where the ball was coming a tad slow. The southpaw continued to smash the boundaries before hitting Nitish Rana’s part-time off-spin for two successive sixes around the park.

When Lungi Ngidi went full, the Punjab-born came down the track to go over the bowler’s head for a huge six. With a couple of runs, he completed his half-century in just 25 balls before celebrating it with another six over the bowler’s head.

Even the premier spinner, Kuldeep Yadav, had no answer against this aggressive batting as Abhishek timed the six over the long-off region. He also used his bottom hand to put the final ball of the 13th over into the stands for a massive over boundary.

Rana again came into the attack during the 15th over of the innings, and the Indian opener, who hasn’t been in good form in the last few years, took it as a great chance to convert his double-figures into triple figures. He thumped the first couple of balls for sixes to register his second IPL century off just 47 balls.

SRH reaches strong position after Abhishek’s century

It was the ninth T20 century for Abhishek as he joined Virat Kohli in the list of most centuries off the shortest format among the Indian players. It was also the fifth time he had clubbed 10 or more sixes in an over, a record which is owned by Chris Gayle on ridiculous 18 times.

Hyderabad crossed the 200-run mark in the 17th over and hoped to reach around 250 by the end of their 20 overs. It has been the same surface where SRH chased 247 in 18.3 overs against Punjab last time.

Brief Scores (at time of writing): SRH- 219/2 (Abhishek Sharma 128*, Axar Patel 1/23) vs DC
