Abishek Porel scored an unbeaten century for Bengal against Delhi in their ongoing Ranji Trophy Group C match on Monday. After reaching the three-figure mark, the wicketkeeper-batter broke down in tears on the field. The emotional moment came amid a rape case involving allegations against him.

Porel scored 114 runs off 137 balls on Day 2, forming a partnership of more than 150 runs with Sudip Kumar Gharami, who also scored a century. The Bengal batter, who represents Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL), registered his second first-class century and his first of the new domestic season. His performance marked a strong return to competitive cricket after a difficult few months.

The century was particularly significant for Porel, who had scored only one first-class hundred in the previous two years. His emotional reaction after reaching the milestone reflected the importance of the achievement. The moment has drawn attention amid the rape case allegations involving the cricketer.

Emotional scenes at Kalyani as Porel reaches his hundred for Bengal

Abishek Porel had been waiting for a moment like this. The Bengal wicketkeeper-batter scored a century against Delhi in Bengal’s opening match of the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season on Monday, October 12. Having scored only one first-class century in the previous two years, Porel’s latest achievement was an important moment in his career. He became emotional after reaching the milestone at the Bengal Cricket Academy Ground in Kalyani.

Bengal started the match strongly, with their bowlers dismissing Delhi for 240 runs on Day 1. On the second day, captain Abhimanyu Easwaran failed to make a big contribution, but Sudip Kumar Gharami and Porel stepped up with centuries. After Bengal lost three wickets quickly, the two batters built a strong partnership to steady the innings and put the team in control. Gharami’s century and Porel’s unbeaten knock helped Bengal cross the 300-run mark.

The DC Keeper-batter scored 114 runs off 137 balls and remained unbeaten at the end of Day 2, while Bengal reached 304/3, taking a 64-run first-innings lead over Delhi. Playing his first competitive match since IPL 2026, Porel delivered an important performance for his team. His emotional reaction after completing his century also drew attention amid the legal proceedings surrounding the rape case allegations against him.

Century comes weeks after Porel was granted bail in a case he has denied

Abishek Porel’s century against Delhi in the Ranji Trophy came weeks after he was granted bail in a rape case in which he has denied the allegations. A medical student from Karnataka filed a complaint against the Bengal cricketer at Mogra Police Station on June 23. She alleged that they had been in a relationship for around three and a half years and had planned to get married. She also claimed that they had travelled abroad together before Porel allegedly denied their relationship.

Following the complaint, police launched an investigation and visited Porel’s residence in Chandannagar several times but could not find him there. The case includes allegations of rape, sexual intercourse on the promise of marriage and criminal intimidation. The woman later approached the Calcutta High Court, which directed the police to arrest Porel on July 20. He spent 36 days in jail before being granted bail on September 17.

The legal proceedings also raised questions about Porel’s cricketing future. He was not included in Bengal’s preliminary squad for the Ranji Trophy, leading to uncertainty about his return to domestic cricket. However, after securing bail, he returned to the Bengal team for the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season. His century against Delhi marked an important performance on his return, although the legal case against him remains separate from his achievements on the field.

What the ton means for Bengal’s Ranji Trophy season and Porel’s IPL future

Abhishek Porel’s century against Delhi is a positive sign for Bengal in the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season. His unbeaten 114 helped Bengal reach 304/3 at the end of Day 2, giving the team a 64-run first-innings lead. His partnership with Sudip Kumar Gharami also helped Bengal recover after losing three wickets quickly. The team will hope that Porel continues this form in the upcoming matches.

The century could also boost Porel’s confidence after a difficult period away from competitive cricket. His performance showed that he can make a valuable contribution to Bengal’s batting line-up. If he maintains this form throughout the Ranji Trophy season, he could strengthen his position as a wicketkeeper-batter and improve his chances of earning further opportunities in domestic cricket.

Porel also represents Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL), and his performance in the Ranji Trophy could help him prepare for the next season. However, his century alone does not guarantee his place in the team, as selection will depend on his overall form, fitness and the franchise’s plans. Meanwhile, the legal proceedings involving the allegations against him remain a separate matter, and their outcome will not be determined by his performances on the cricket field.
