The surface at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay for the second Test between Australia and Bangladesh on the opening day saw 18 wickets fall as the home side ended the day with a lead of 101 runs, having been reduced to 165 runs for the loss of eight wickets.
Earlier in the day, the Najmul Hossain Shanto-led side was blown away for 64 runs in 34 overs during the first innings as their number 11, Shoriful Islam, was their leading run-getter of the line-up with 14 runs. They came into the contest after their nine-wicket win in the opening game in Darwin.
Bangladesh collapse to a humiliating 64 all out as Mitchell Starc runs riot with 6-12
On the very first delivery of the game, Shadman Islam got a thick outside edge into the hands of the gully fielder against Mitchell Starc, who picked up his five-wicket haul in just 22 balls. Out of their top four, three batters were dismissed for ducks, two of which were golden ducks.

Mushfiqur Rahim was late in bringing his bat down against Pat Cummins as his in-swinging delivery went through the defence and broke the stumps. Their helper of the lower-order batter, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, couldn’t do much either with the bat.
Starc returned with figures of 6/12 in his 10 overs, including four maidens, while Cummins ended up with 3/25 in 10 overs. Josh Hazlewood picked up the solitary wicket of Hasan Mahmud to blow away the Asian side for 64 runs.
Australia suffer their own batting collapse, slumping to 165-8 as Bangladesh fight back
Australia didn’t make a strong start with the bat either and were reduced to 41/3 as Marnus Labuschagne continued to suffer in his poor form. Steve Smith and Cameron Green stabled the innings with the 77-run partnership for the fourth wicket as the latter remained unbeaten on 51 runs off 81 balls thanks to eight boundaries at a strike rate of around 63.

However, Australia collapsed badly towards the end of the day’s play, when they lost four wickets for three runs. Shoriful Islam was their best bowler, thanks to his magical figures of 6/35 in 11 overs with two maidens.
