Arshdeep Singh didn’t make a great start to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 with just two wickets in four clashes for the Punjab Kings, who hoped to see the best of the veteran left-arm pacer during their fixture against the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium.

The visiting captain, Shreyas Iyer, won the toss and decided to bowl first on a surface which he reckoned was dry but would help chase heading into the second innings of the encounter. On a good surface, Mumbai needed to make a good start, but Arshdeep Singh had some other plans.

Arshdeep Singh’s double-wicket over creates issues for MI in IPL 2026

The left-arm pacer started his spell well, leaking just one single on the last ball after five successive dots. And he used the pressure pretty well to pick up the wicket of Ryan Rickelton for two runs. The left-handed opening batter picked the ball off his pads and hit it straight to Shashank Singh at the deep square leg region.

The fielder was stationed at the exact position and didn’t need to make any adjustments. The left-handed batter stuck it well but couldn’t find the vacant area. This helped Arshdeep to become the fifth pacer with 100 or more wickets in the IPL, as Trent Boult leads the chart with 144 scalps.

This was the Indian bowler’s first wicket inside the powerplay of the IPL in his last 11 innings. Suryakumar Yadav made his way into the middle at number three and went back to the hut for a golden duck.

The left-arm seamer got the ball to shape away from the T20 World Cup-winning captain, who went for a drive. The swing took the outside edge and flew to the short third man region, where Yuzvendra Chahal grabbed a simple catch to send the batter back to the pavilion.

That was the third time each Arshdeep dismissed both Rickelton and SKY in the shortest format.

Naman Dhir takes charge after MI’s early struggle

Mumbai, due to losing two back-to-back wickets, tried to settle themselves in building the innings as they reached 33/2 in five overs before Naman Dhir, promoted at number four, smashed Vijaykumar Vyshak for a 15-run over to end the powerplay for 48 runs for the loss of two wickets.

In the next over, Quinton de Kock and Dhir lashed on Chahal’s leg spin for 19 runs in an over. That pushed Shreyas to make some changes in their planning and field positions.

Brief Scores (at the time of writing): MI- 94/2 (Q de Kock 49*, Arshdeep Singh 2/4) vs PBKS.
