Australia experienced a forgettable opening day of the two-match Test series against Bangladesh at the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin, where they were bundled out for 198 runs in the first innings, with the tourists ending the day at 96/1 in 24 overs to find themselves in a strong position in the game.
Australia’s batting struggled terribly by the end of the day’s play. It was only their former captain, Steve Smith, who played a lone-wolf knock of 71 runs, thanks to seven boundaries and one six, while the rest of the line-up failed to convert their starts into big scores.

On the fourth delivery of the 12th over, Jake Weatherald, on 23 runs, went for a big drive and got an outside edge into the hands of the wicket-keeper, Litton Das. Two overs later, Travis Head, with an angled bat, got a thick inside edge onto the top of the leg stump.

Marnus Labuschagne tried his best to get set on the tough playing conditions, but his feet didn’t move and were rooted to the crease as he poked at Najmul Hossain Shanto for one run. Cameron Green gave a catching practice to Mushfiqur Rahim at the mid-wicket region for 13 runs.

For Alex Carey, the ball went through the defence of the left-handed batter and disturbed the stumps. Hasan Mahmud created issues for the home batters with his pace, line, and length and ended up with six wickets as the hosts were bundled out for 198 runs in the third session.
Smith’s wicket was the biggest prize for Bangladesh, who showed their position on the world stage with the red-ball in hand.

Australia were bundled out for 198 runs in 53 overs. Their best partnership was 56 runs between Smith and Carey for the fifth wicket, after which none of the batters were able to stand in the middle and counter the Bangladesh bowlers. Along with Mahmud’s six-wicket haul, both Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain picked up two wickets each.

Bangladesh made a decent 36-run opening stand before their unbeaten 60-run stand for the second wicket shouldered them to 96/1, trailing the first innings of Australia by 102 runs. Mominul Haque remained unbeaten on 35 runs off 49 balls while Tanzid Tamim nailed an unbeaten 32 runs.
