The pressure was massive on Pakistan after they lost the first two Tests of the three-match series against England at Headingley and Lord’s as the visitors’ batting crumbled in the first two games. The focus was on their captain, Babar Azam, who was dismissed for just seven runs in the first innings of the third Test at Edgbaston.

England’s captain, Joe Root, winning the toss, decided to bowl first even on a flat surface. They went wicketless in the last game, while Pakistan made four changes, including the return of Saim Ayub, while Ghazi Ghori was handed the debut cap for the national side.

How Babar Azam got out — Full breakdown of his cheap dismissal at Edgbaston

Babar walked into the middle in the ninth over of the innings and opened his account with a double as he clipped the ball through the backward square leg region. He continued to get beaten by Gus Atkinson as the ball skidded off the deck to beat the outside edge of the blade.

On the very first delivery of the 14th over of the innings, Babar aimed to drive Atkinson, but the bat turned on impact. The thick inside edge raced through square leg and gave the captain his first boundary of the encounter. But the bowler had the last laugh.

On the final delivery of his next over, Babar was dismissed on seven runs. It was a good-length ball for which Babar should have been forward. But he was rooted to the crease as the ball sneaked under his bat to hit the top of off-stump. He played that as the ball kept low, but it was he who played the length wrong.

Pakistan collapse to 56/5 — Inside their batting meltdown vs England

Pakistan’s biggest issue of the series has been their poor batting performance. They have failed to cross the 200-run mark in all four innings of the game. Their best score was 194 runs in the fourth innings of the second Test match at Lord’s.

Ayub was dismissed for a ten-ball duck while Azan Awais was also dismissed for nine runs. None of their batters, apart from Saud Shakeel, made it to double figures, as Shakeel was unbeaten on 34 runs off 30 balls with the help of six boundaries.
