BCCI parts ways with T Dilip as fielding coach — Former Assam player set to replace him

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to change its support staff, as it has decided to renew the contracts of assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate and fielding coach T Dilip ahead of its two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, starting from August 15. 

The reports have confirmed that the BCCI secretary, Devajit Saikia, noted that both support staff members have completed their contractual tenure with the national side, as he said, “both their contracts were over during the recent England and Ireland tours, and we are not extending their contracts” in a recent interaction.

The decision from the board has marked the end of a two-year stint for Ten Doeschate, who joined the Indian side during Gautam Gambhir's coaching during their tour of Sri Lanka in 2024. Even though he received a one-year extension, his contract was allowed to lapse, as the former Netherlands player wasn’t keen on continuing in the role.

The BCCI, on the other hand, has also begun the process of finding a suitable replacement for Dilip. The board is looking forward to the new support staff being in place before their preparations for the two-match Test series in Sri Lanka.

Many reports have claimed that the former Assam player, Subhadeep Ghosh, has emerged as the leading contender for the fielding coach’s role. A few other coaches from the Centre of Excellence are also in the mix, but Ghosh appears to be in front of many.

T Dilip's five-year stint: From the 2024 T20 World Cup to the 2026 title defence

Over the past few months, India’s biggest worry has been their fielding. Their failure in completing catches, unsuccessful run-outs, and poor efficiency have grabbed so much criticism from the fans and the former players of the game. And now, the biggest agenda for the board is to get better in this department of the game.

T Dilip joined the support staff of India as fielding coach in late 2021 and has been associated with the national side across all formats. During his time with the team, the blue brigade reached the 2023 ODI World Cup final and won the Champions Trophy 2025 and T20 World Cups in 2024 and 2026.
