BCCI Secretary addresses rumours surrounding Shreyas Iyer as new ODI captain
Several fans on Twitter and other social media platforms seconded the thought, and they anticipated Iyer to take over as the new ODI captain of Indian team.

Shreyas Iyer’s name was not included in the Asia cup 2025 squad. He not only was not included in the 15 member squad, but he wasn't in the standby’s list. Also the fans on Twitter started questioning BCCI over Iyer’s snub in the Asia cup 2025. Subsequently, there were reports floating around that Iyer might replace Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain and he might continue as a captain till 2027 ODI World Cup.
Several fans on Twitter and other social media platforms seconded the thought, and they anticipated Iyer to take over as the new ODI captain of Indian team. But BCCI secretary, Devajit Saikia has quashed all the rumors and said there are no such things developing around the ODI captain contention. It is worth noting that recently there were reports that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli might announce retirement from the ODI format.

Tha air to this rumour had to do with their age which will be around 40 years when the 2027 World Cup will arrive. It's also worth considering that both the players have retired from T20Is and Tests and they are active only in the ODI format. With India playing lesser ODIs in the coming year, both the players will be seen very rarely on the cricket field wearing the Indian jersey.
