When the Mumbai Indians smashed 195 runs in their first innings during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Wankhede Stadium, it felt like a decent score, and perhaps the visiting side would face a little difficulty in crossing the line. But that wasn’t the case at all. 

Shreyas Iyer, the PBKS captain, and Prabhsimran Singh, the opening batter of the side, led the chase with their respective half-centuries as they went over the line by seven wickets with 21 balls to spare, which was a proper hammering in this game.

One of the biggest issues for Mumbai in this campaign has been their bowling department. Jasprit Bumrah, their premier pacer, cooked out of a T20 World Cup 2026, didn’t manage to get a single wicket heading into this encounter. And the same feat continued even in this fixture. 

Hardik Pandya, the Mumbai Indians captain, brought Bumrah back into the attack when they wanted to break the partnership between Iyer and Prabhsimran. On the fourth delivery of the 13th over, the right-handed Mumbai batter played an excellent six.

It was a short ball outside the off stump as Iyer went on the back foot and clubbed the pull shot over the deep mid-wicket region for a massive six as the ball went back 10 rows into the crowd. The face of the crowd outlined the story as no one could believe what they saw.

Iyer ended up with a dashing knock of 66 runs in 35 balls at a strike rate of 188.57, thanks to five boundaries and four sixes.

PBKS completes chase by seven wickets in 16.3 overs

Mumbai, in the first innings, posted a massive score of 195 runs for the loss of six wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Their opener, Quinton de Kock, celebrated an unbeaten knock of 112 runs off 60 balls at a strike rate of 186.67, shouldering on eight boundaries and seven sixes as he put up a strong stand with Naman Dhir, who nailed 50 runs in 31 balls with the help of three boundaries and as many sixes.

Punjab’s opener Prabhsimran remained undefeated on 80 runs in 39 balls with the help of 11 boundaries and two sixes as they completed the chase quite comfortably.

Brief Scores: PBKS 198/3 (Prabhsimran Singh 80*, S Iyer 66, A Ghazanfar 2/31) beat MI- 192/6 (Q de Kock 112*, Arshdeep Singh 3/22) by seven wickets.
