Away from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, the discussion has also been on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and its officials. India’s performance in the white-ball games has been fantastic in the last few months, with them winning the T20 World Cup 2026 at home, beating New Zealand in the final.

There were a few questions on their red-ball performance, having lost two home series in the last three attempts against New Zealand and South Africa, as the Shubman Gill-led side prepares themselves for another spin challenge in Sri Lanka after a couple of months. That will be followed by more away series in the longest format.

BCCI to extend Ajit Agarkar’s contract as chief selector

Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the senior selection committee, under whose tenure the national side won three ICC trophies, including the two T20 World Cups in 2024 and 2026, apart from the Champions Trophy 2025, is set to get an extension when his contract expires in June this year.

The Indian Express has reported that Agarkar’s contract will now get an increment by a year till June 2027. Apart from winning the three trophies, the Rohit Sharma-led side also reached the final of the ODI World Cup 2023, where they lost to Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

With the 50-over World Cup being in October and November next year, the BCCI has shown its interest in retaining Agarkar, who is known to take very tough calls for a longer period of time.

"Under Agarkar’s tenure, the team had a seamless transition and was fearless in taking bold decisions. The board felt he should continue. The BCCI officer bearers will be speaking to him on the sidelines of IPL games to update him.” The BCCI official expressed.

The board wanted to provide experience and continuity to the two selectors, RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha, who are yet to complete their first year in the job.

Ajit Agarkar wins trust from BCCI to stay as chief selector

Once the veterans- Rohit, Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Ravichandran Ashwin- decided to retire from the longest format, the BCCI handed captaincy to Shubman Gill in Tests and Suryakumar Yadav in T20Is.

In the shorter formats, India has been successful while Agarkar hasn’t shied away from calling the shots. He took some bold decisions like dropping Gill from the T20 WC 2026 and getting inform Ishan Kishan at the eleventh hour.

This fearless approach has satisfied the officials. The same Agarkar committee also showed their trust in Sanju Samson, who repaid that with three fine knocks in the quarter-final, semifinal, and even in the final.
