Is Ben Stokes about to quit as England captain after ENG vs NZ at Lord's? Full story explained
Will the Test captain of the England side, Ben Stokes, lose his captaincy after the recent nightclub incident followed by their 115-run win over New Zealand during the first Test at Lord's?

Ben Stokes’ future as England’s Test captain is in serious doubt after it was revealed that he and Gus Atkinson are being investigated by the England Cricket Board (ECB) regarding the undisclosed incident that took place at the nightclub on Monday (June 08) morning.
The incident, described by the ECB as a breach of the team protocols, was followed by their 115-run win over New Zealand during the opening Test of the three-match series at Lord’s. It has been reported that the incident is serious enough for Stokes to consider his position as captain.

The incident has been referred to the Cricket Regulator, and both Stokes and Gus Atkinson look set to miss the second Test of the ongoing series at the Kennington Oval on June 17 as the investigation takes place.
None of the players was injured, and the incident is understood to have involved players from the Saracens Rugby club, who were present as part of their end-of-the-season celebrations, and to have involved a disagreement between Atkinson and an unnamed academy player.
“The England Cricket Board (ECB) is currently investigating a breach of team protocols following the conclusion of the first Men's Test against New Zealand. Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were present at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning when an incident took place.” The ECB statement expressed.
“We are currently seeking further information, and an announcement regarding the squad for the second Test will be made in due course. The Cricket Regulator has been informed, and we will provide a further update when possible.” It addressed.

England were forced to introduce a midnight curfew for players and staff after their winter trip to Australia, where the players’ off-field behaviour came under scrutiny.
What punishment could Ben Stokes face? ECB investigation & cricket regulator rules explained
In Stokes’ potential absence, Harry Brook, the vice-captain of the Test side, will take charge of the red-ball side. But it’s noteworthy that Brook was fined and reprimanded after a late-night incident involving a bounce, which saw Jacob Bethell warned for his conduct.
Ben Duckett was also visibly drunk when filmed by a fan during the controversial mid-break break to Noosa during the Ashes 2025/26. Stokes, last year, revealed that he had given up on alcohol but looked forward to a ‘proper beer with the boys’ after their opening Test victory.
“I knew how big this game was in terms of the result and how it was going to be perceived externally if it didn't go well, but now it's gone well. I probably won't be really happy and smiling until I get up there and share a proper beer with the boys.” The all-rounder claimed.
Stokes' Bristol 2017 to Lord's 2026 — England cricket's nightclub problem won't go away
Stokes’ own career has been punctuated by regular disciplinary issues, as he was involved in a late-night street fight after an ODI in Bristol in 2017. He was cleared but was handed a back-dated suspension for bringing the game into disrepute. That saw him missing the Ashes that season.
The managing director of the England side, Rob Key, denied that the team had a drinking problem but conceded that “there are two or three players that can be irresponsible with alcohol given that opportunity.”
If things go as expected, Stokes would be removed from leadership and wouldn’t be part of the second Oval Test, along with Atkinson, as they have yet to announce a squad for the second Test.
