Ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 between the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Shaheed Veer Narayan International Cricket Stadium in Raipur, the speculation has been around the injury status of the MI captain, Hardik Pandya.

The premier Indian all-rounder missed the last contest for his franchise against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Wankhede Stadium due to a back spasm. In his place, Suryakumar Yadav, the vice-captain, shouldered the responsibility of the side.

Hardik Pandya out for RCB vs MI— back spasm forces MI captain to miss yet another must-win IPL 2026 game

The five-time champions get prepared for their must-win encounter against the Bengaluru side, who come into this fixture after their two successive defeats against the Gujarat Titans and the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), dropping them to the fourth position of the points table. The playoff stakes are high on both sides, as the fan anxiety is at its best.

Hardik Pandya joined the franchise in Raipur a few days after the entire squad came. He has been short of form in this season with both bat and ball in hand. Under his leadership, Mumbai lost seven of their nine games and managed to win only against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Titans.

With both bat and ball, the all-rounder has been unimpressive. In the eight he has featured, the veteran has managed only 146 runs at an average of just over 20, while with the ball, he has picked up only four wickets in eight encounters at an expensive economy rate of 11.90 and a strike rate of 31.00.

What MI's medical team said about Pandya's fitness before the Raipur clash

Whether the Indian star returns to full fitness soon or not will remain a concern for the franchise. For the time being, under Suryakumar, the Mumbai side has returned to winning ways. On the eve of the game, the franchise shared a fitness update of their regular captain.

Hardik continues to be evaluated by the medical team, and then they will inform us of his progress. The second one is Surya's coming in tomorrow (vs RCB).The franchise expressed in a statement.

If Mumbai beats Bengaluru, then, more than strengthening their position for the playoffs, they will spoil the party of their rivals. If they lose, then Bengaluru will be the favorites to finish among the top two of the points table.
