The 32-year-old English cricketer Jamie Overton has already been ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2026 due to his thigh injury. While it is a big blow for the five-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK), they have announced the replacement. The 25-year-old South African cricketer Dian Forrester has replaced Overton for the remainder of the ongoing IPL season.

The five-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings had their worst experience in the IPL 2025, where they finished in the 10th or last position after managing to earn only eight points. They also had a poor start in the IPL 2026, where they lost their first three matches. However, they won four out of their last five games, as CSK are currently in fifth position in the IPL 2026 points table with 12 points after 11 games (six wins and five losses).

While CSK have faced some crises in the squad, they are strongly battling to secure a playoff spot. The former five-time IPL-winning captain MS Dhoni hasn't played a game in this IPL season yet, while Dewald Brevis and Spencer Johnson have taken time to recover from injury. While Brevis is now playing, Johnson has yet to play a match this season. In the meantime, Ramakrishna Ghosh, Khaleel Ahmed, Ayush Mhatre, and Nathan Ellis have already been ruled out of the season, along with the latest inclusion of Jamie Overton in the list.

Jamie Overton ruled out of IPL 2026 — What happened and how bad is right thigh injury?

The pace-bowling all-rounder Jamie Overton played an important role for the CSK in the ongoing IPL 2026. Apart from being the second leading wicket-taker for his franchise this season, 14 wickets in 11 games, the lower-order batter Overton also scored 136 runs in six innings with an average of 34.00 and a strike rate of 158.13, including the scores of 43 not out and 37.

So, Overton's injury is a big blow for the CSK. The English cricketer has sustained a right thigh injury, which has forced him to leave the franchise early this season, as he is set to return home after being ruled out for the remainder of the season. His injury status will be assessed further after his return to the UK.

Who is Dian Forrester? Everything you need to know about CSK's new INR 75 lakh signing

CSK have signed South African cricketer Dian Forrester as a replacement for Overton for the remainder of the season. The youngster has been added to the squad for INR 75 lakhs.

Forrester has played five T20Is after making his international cricket debut last March 15, just after the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. He is a left-handed batter and right-arm fast bowler, popular as a batting all-rounder. In his T20I career, he has scored 83 runs, including the highest score of 21 not out, while delivering only one over without picking up a wicket.

Recently, Forrester served for Rawalpindiz in the PSL 2026. He scored 132 runs in six innings with an average of 44.00 (the highest batting average among Rawalpindiz's batters) and a strike rate of 171.42, smashing seven fours and 11 sixes (managing a boundary in less than five balls). Forrester also picked up two wickets in five innings, delivering more than one over twice (maximum delivered two overs).

Not just cover for Overton — How Forrester's batting depth adds new dimension to CSK's IPL 2026 campaign

Dian Forrester's joining the CSK squad isn't a like-for-like replacement, as the young South African cricketer is better known for his batting. CSK's batting line-up is still struggling, as the franchise is heavily dependent on Sanju Samson before the captain Ruturaj Gaikwad returned to form. While the South African youngster Dewald Brevis has failed to fire up, Forrester can challenge his place for the remainder of the season.

In the meantime, Forrester's presence can build up the sixth bowling option for the franchise. However, to replace Overton, Spencer Johnson can be a better option. However, the 30-year-old left-arm fast bowler hasn't played a professional cricket match for more than a year, as the Australian fast bowler's last game was for Kolkata Knight Riders on April 8, 2025, against Lucknow Super Giants in Kolkata. The 23-year-old New Zealand all-rounder Zak Foulkes can be another solution, who has already played 22 T20 international matches. Meanwhile, the experienced Blackcaps fast bowler Matt Henry has taken two wickets in three games of the season.
