England defeated Sri Lanka in the Super 8 match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. It was a clinical win from the team as they outplayed the hosts in all departments of the game. Sri Lanka decided to bowl first after winning the toss, but they failed to chase down 147 runs in the second innings.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's Dushan Hemantha etched his name in the history books by getting hit wicket. He became the first Sri Lankan batter to get hit wicket in the T20 World Cup history. This rare feat happened in the 12th over when Jamie Overton bowled a short ball, and the batter tried to play the ball.

The ball rolled off the thigh pad to the on-side but as he tried to complete the shot, his bat hit the stumps, leading to his wicket. The England players were ecstatic about the wicket and started celebrating as the batter had to return to the pavilion.

It was a poor batting performance from the Sri Lanka batters as they were bowled out for 95 runs. They couldn't form the partnerships and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Skipper Dasun Shanaka tried to keep the scoreboard running as he scored 30 off 24 balls, including one boundary and two sixes.

England's Will Jacks picked up three wickets while Jofra Archer, Liam Dawson, and Adil Rashid claimed two wickets each. For an incredible performance, Will Jacks won the Player of the Match award. He also hit 21 off 14 balls, including four boundaries.

I love getting that responsibility: Will Jacks

England's star all-rounder Will Jacks was quite happy with his performance. He opened up about how he likes getting the responsibility, especially in crucial situations. He played an incredible game of cricket today, helping England win the match and get those much-needed victory.

"I love getting that responsibility with the ball. I think it encourages me to get into the game and perform better. I think I like that responsibility and bowling in the powerplay is something I've done a lot. So it's not foreign to me. And when we get on the surface like that, I come into the game knowing what I need to do. We haven't quite been at our best, but importantly, we've been winning those close games," said Will Jacks at the post-match presentation.
