India Post 471 in 1st Innings as Gill, Jaiswal and Pant Shine Bright
India put up a strong first-innings total of 471 runs in 113 overs in the opening Test against England at Headingley. While skipper Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant starred with brilliant centuries, the lower order couldn’t hold on and collapsed quickly.
Yashasvi Jaiswal came out with a positive mindset and attacked the bowlers right from the start. He looked in complete control and hit boundaries all around the ground. His innings of 101 runs from 158 balls, including 16 fours and a six, gave India a solid platform. He was finally bowled by Ben Stokes, but his knock had already set the tone.
Gill Leads from the Front, Rahul Supports
KL Rahul gave good support with a steady 42 off 78 balls, hitting 8 boundaries before getting caught behind off Brydon Carse. At the other end, captain Shubman Gill played a very calm and confident innings. He paced it perfectly and played some classy shots on both sides of the wicket. His 147 from 227 balls had 19 fours and 1 six, showing great maturity.
When India lost a couple of quick wickets in the middle, Rishabh Pant took charge. He started off watchfully but then shifted gears and played some explosive shots. Pant reached his hundred with a big six and kept going strong. His attacking 134 off 178 balls included 12 fours and 6 sixes. He looked dangerous until Josh Tongue finally got him out LBW.

Both Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue bowled well in the later part of the innings, picking up 4 wickets each. They hit the right lengths and cleaned up the tail. India finished with 471 runs, a strong total but slightly disappointing considering how well they were placed earlier. The partnership between Gill and Pant was the highlight of the innings, while Jaiswal’s century gave India a perfect start. The tail didn’t offer much, but overall, India will feel confident with this total.
