The Duckworth-Lewis method, created by Frank Duckworth and Tony Lewis, helps decide the results of cricket matches affected by rain. Tony Lewis passed away at the age of 78 in 2020, and Frank Duckworth passed away on June 21 at the age of 84.
The Duckworth-Lewis method was first used in international cricket in 1997 and officially adopted by the ICC in 2001 to set revised targets in rain-shortened games. It was recently used in the T20 World Cup when Afghanistan beat Bangladesh in a rain-affected match, securing their first semifinal spot.
Before this method, it was challenging to create a fair run chase in weather-affected cricket matches. After Duckworth and Lewis retired, the method was updated by Australian statistician Steven Stern and renamed the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method.
Both Duckworth and Lewis were honored with MBEs (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in June 2010.
The DLS method uses a complex statistical analysis that considers factors like remaining wickets and lost overs to set a revised target for the team batting second.
