Watch: Harry Brook smashes Wellalage for 30-run over

England captain Harry Brook smashed left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage for a 30-run over in the first T20I of the three-match series at the Rose Bowl in Southampton. The right-handed batter smashed three sixes and as many boundaries in the same over.

The visiting captain, Charith Asalanka, won the toss and opted to bowl first on a surface that looked a bit slow. The home side rested opener Ben Duckett and pacer Jofra Archer, and handed the debut cap to Aneurin Donald.

It was the fifth over of the innings when Dunith Wellalage came into the attack and was up against Brook, who went hard on the pull and was undone by the ball holding in the surface. However, he got enough to clear mid-on as it landed flush on the cushions.

On the second delivery, Brook hammered the overpitched ball straight back over the umpire’s head for a boundary, which was followed by a flat-batted boundary. The fourth delivery was nailed for a six as the Yorkshire batter was quick down on the knee to sweep it over the short fine region.

On the penultimate ball, Brook took on the Sri Lankan left-arm spinner to the cleaners. He launched the tossed-up delivery straight back the rope for another six. The captain punished the final delivery into the backward point region for another boundary to claim 30 runs off the single over.

**Brook's 114* charges England to 254/4 after Jos Buttler's 80**

England smashed 31 runs off the first two overs of the innings before losing Donald for 12 runs off five balls. However, Jos Buttler and Brook recovered themselves with a 128-run second-wicket stand off just 60 balls as the former collected a fine knock of 80 runs off just 44 balls at a strike rate of 181.82, thanks to eight boundaries and three sixes.

Brook celebrated his century in just 42 balls, which was the joint second-fastest with Liam Livingstone, after Phil Salt's century in 39 deliveries against South Africa in Manchester in 2025.

The Yorkshire batter remained unbeaten on 114-run knock off 49 balls at a strike rate of 232.65, thanks to 10 boundaries and six sixes. England finished with 254 runs for the loss of four wickets in their allotted 20 overs.
