'This series will be a real test' — Hashan Tillakaratne's big warning to Shubman Gill ahead of SL vs IND 2026 Tests

Former Sri Lankan batter and Bangladesh coach Hashan Tillakaratne believes the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka will be a real challenge for Shubman Gill and Team India. He said India should not take the two-match series lightly, especially because the matches will be played in Sri Lankan conditions.

Tillakaratne explained that Sri Lankan pitches usually help spinners, making batting much more difficult. He said Gill has been impressive during India's recent Test series in England, but the turning tracks in Sri Lanka will present a completely different challenge. 

According to him, this series will be the real test of Gill's batting technique, captaincy, and ability to handle quality spin bowling.

The former Sri Lankan star also praised Shubman Gill's batting ability. He said Gill has the skill, technique, and temperament needed to score runs in tough conditions. However, Tillakaratne warned that performing on spinning pitches in Sri Lanka is never easy, and Gill will have to prove himself in the challenging series.

In an interview with RevSportz (a renowned sports media outlet),  Hashan Tillakaratne praised Shubman Gill but warned that the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka would be a real challenge for the Indian captain. He said Gill has been in outstanding form as a batter and captain, but the spin-friendly conditions in Sri Lanka will test him like never before.

The former Sri Lankan batter said Gill has impressed everyone with his performances in England and has shown excellent technique on good batting pitches. However, he believes Sri Lanka's turning tracks will be a completely different challenge, where Gill's batting skills, temperament, and leadership will be put to the test.

The upcoming series will be Gill's first-ever Test assignment against Sri Lanka and his first Test on Sri Lankan soil. Despite his outstanding record as India's Test captain, Tillakaratne believes this tour will show how well Gill can adapt to difficult spinning conditions and lead his team against a quality Sri Lankan attack.

Shubman Gill, who made his Test debut for India in 2020, is yet to play a Test match against Sri Lanka. The upcoming two-match series will be his first red-ball assignment against the island nation and his first Test tour of Sri Lanka. The Indian skipper has an overall Test batting average of 44.31 and averages 47.31 in Asia.

Speaking about Gill, Hashan Tillakaratne praised the Indian captain's batting technique but said the conditions in Sri Lanka would provide a much tougher challenge. He believes Gill has performed brilliantly in England, but batting on spin-friendly pitches will be a different test. Tillakaratne said:

"I love watching him bat. He is technically very sound and plays beautifully on good batting tracks. This series will be a real test for him on turning pitches. Gill has been impressive so far in England, but facing Sri Lanka's turning pitches will truly test his technique and leadership against quality spin bowling. It will be interesting to see how he performs in these conditions."

Without Bumrah in the squad, can Gill's 82.76 Test captaincy average survive Sri Lanka's turning tracks from August 15?

Shubman Gill will enter the Sri Lanka Test series with an outstanding record as India's Test captain. In nine matches, he has scored 1,076 runs in 15 innings at an incredible average of 82.76. The 26-year-old has also smashed six centuries and one fifty, with a highest score of 269. His average is the second-highest by a Test captain with at least 1,000 runs, behind only Sir Don Bradman.

India, however, will have to play the two-match series without Jasprit Bumrah, who has been ruled out due to injury. The selectors have named Auqib Nabi as his replacement after his impressive Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season, where he finished as the highest wicket-taker and played a key role in Jammu and Kashmir's title-winning campaign. Bumrah's absence is a major setback, especially considering his outstanding record in Asia, where he has taken 62 wickets in 16 Tests at an average of 17.70.

The series, starting on August 15, will be a big test for Gill's captaincy and batting. Sri Lanka's spin-friendly pitches will challenge India's batters, while the bowling attack will have to perform without Bumrah's experience. Gill will be expected to lead from the front and maintain his remarkable record as captain in difficult overseas conditions.
