Afghanistan’s cricket fraternity has found itself at the centre of an emotional and powerful conversation after wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz publicly reacted to reports of a hospital strike in the country during Ramadan. He took to his social media account to call out the international law and how they are silent amidst the ongoing political tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Gurbaz wrote about the hospital bombing in Afghanistan and also raised concerns about the innocent lives lost due to the activities. Players like Gurbaz have often used their platform to highlight issues beyond the boundary ropes, and this recent reaction shows how deeply they are connected to the situation back home.

“A hospital bombed in Afghanistan during Ramadan by Pakistan… Where is international law now? Where is humanity now? How many innocent lives must be lost before the world speaks?” he wrote on his Twitter account.

What happened in the Afghanistan hospital tragedy

Pakistan launched an airstrike on Afghan Taliban installations in Kabul and Nangarhar Province on Monday night. The sky was filled with plumes of smoke and fire. According to reports, the strikes were part of Operation Ghazab lil-Haq, launched by Pakistan on February 26. The military suspected “unprovoked firing” by Afghan Taliban forces across the border, and since then, Pakistan have done airstrikes on Afghanistan.

Videos surfacing on the internet showcase smoke going towards the sky as the city looks devastated by the bombings. Local reports suggest that the airstrike has struck a local hospital where around 400 people have been killed, and over 250 have been injured. As per reports, Pakistan targeted Taliban military infrastructure at two locations in Kabul.

How Afghanistan national cricket team players reacted to the incident

Many players from the Afghanistan national team have expressed grief over the incident on social media. Apart from Gurbaz, even Rashid Khan took to Twitter to speak up about the horrific incident. He urged the UN and the human rights community to take the matter into their hands and provide justice to the country.

“I am deeply saddened by the latest reports of civilian casualties as a result of Pakistani airstrikes in Kabul. Targeting civilian homes, educational facilities or medical infrastructure, either intentional or by mistake, is a war crime. The sheer disregard for human lives, especially during the holy month of Ramadan, is sickening and deeply concerning. It will only fuel division and hatred. I call upon the UN and other human rights agencies to thoroughly investigate this latest atrocity and hold the perpetrators to account. I stand with my Afghan people in this difficult time. We shall heal, and we will rise as a nation. We always do. Inshallah!” he wrote.

“Tonight in Kabul, hope was extinguished at a hospital. Young men seeking treatment were murdered in a bombing by the Pakistani military regime. Mothers waited at the gates, calling their sons’ names. On the 28th night of Ramadan, their lives were cut short,” wrote Mohammad Nabi.

Fans react to Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s emotional post on social media

The fans have taken to Twitter to condemn the heinous act of Pakistan after viewing the posts of the Afghanistan players. Several other Afghan players have taken to social media to urge the UN to intervene and find a solution to the problem. Many innocent lives are lost due to these attacks.
