Ravichandran Ashwin’s future with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has become a major talking point ahead of the IPL 2026 mini auction, with retention discussions currently underway. As per sources, the veteran off-spinner has sought clarity from the franchise on their plans for him in the upcoming season. The 37-year-old has reportedly indicated that he would be open to leaving if he is not part of CSK’s long-term vision. This development has sparked speculation about a possible change in his association with the team he first represented over a decade ago.
Ashwin was bought by CSK for a hefty INR 9.75 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction, marking his return to his home franchise after nearly ten years. The signing generated significant excitement among fans, as it reunited the seasoned campaigner with the team where he made his name. However, his comeback season didn’t quite go according to plan. The off-spinner struggled to secure a consistent spot in the playing XI, raising questions about his role and the franchise’s plans for his future contributions.

In IPL 2025, Ashwin featured in just nine of CSK’s 14 league matches, the fewest games he has played in a single season since his debut in 2009. His performance metrics also dipped, with an economy rate of 9.12, the highest in his IPL career, surpassing his previous worst of 8.49. These figures, coupled with his reduced game time, have fueled uncertainty over his retention. With the mini auction approaching, CSK will need to decide whether to persist with Ashwin or explore other options.
Ashwin likely to be traded to some IPL team
The IPL 2026 auction schedule is yet to be announced, with the retention deadline dependent on its final date. While mega auctions take place every three years, mini auctions are held annually between November and February. The player trade window remains open until a week before the auction, giving CSK and Ravichandran Ashwin time to decide on his future. Ashwin recently hinted at a possible trade during a YouTube conversation with Sanju Samson. If he departs, he would also step down as Director of Operations at the CSK Academy to avoid a conflict of interest.
Captaincy remains a major talking point for CSK after MS Dhoni replaced Ruturaj Gaikwad mid-season in 2025 due to injury. Dhoni’s future is expected to be clarified only after pre-season training, while Gaikwad is likely to resume leadership if fit. Senior management, including Dhoni and Gaikwad, have been in Chennai for internal meetings covering both captaincy and retention plans. Ashwin remains one of the IPL’s most successful bowlers, with 187 wickets in 221 matches at an economy of 7.29, along with 833 runs at a strike rate of 118.
