Controversy erupts after Jason Holder grabs the catch while diving on the ground to dismiss Rajat Patidar during the RCB vs GT clash in the Indian Premier League 2026.

There was a moment of controversy during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash between the Gujarat Titans and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad around the catch of Jason Holder, who fell on the floor while grabbing the ball.
It was a massive moment in the game as the RCB captain, Rajat Patidar, was dismissed while playing the pull shot against the short ball. The visiting camp was not happy with the decision of the third umpire as they wanted him to see more replays.

It was the fourth delivery of the eighth over. Arshad Khan put up a short ball at the right-handed batter, who went for a pull and got a top edge towards the deep backward square leg. Jason Holder was stationed at that position and charged to his right while taking a low fine catch.

However, Kagiso Rabada was charging also across to take it, but the big West Indies player was able to ignore it. The Bengaluru players had an argument as they thought that Holder wasn’t in control of the catch and had touched the turf. But the third umpire was happy with the decision.
That was a massive change in the batting as Bengaluru lost Jitesh Sharma in the very next over and eventually got bundled out for 155runs in 19.2 overs before the Titans completed the chase quite comfortably.
What MCC law says about catches close to the ground and control of the ball
Now question arises where the catch the valid or not. The MCC’s law of the cricket say that a catch is considered fair if the fielder has ‘full control over the ball and their own movement before it touches the ground.’ But the ball in Holder’s hand was smelling the grass at the end of the catch.

The former Indian opener, Aakash Chopra, has debated the same on his X account as he reckoned that despite having the ball in control whole sliding, it touched the ground when he fell on the floor.
“The biggest question is when he was diving, was the ball touching the ground? I felt no it was touching the ground as per the visuals we saw. May be it was not out but was given out. That’s what I feel.” Chopra expressed on his X account.
