Ireland, under the leadership of Gaby Lewis, have scripted history with a stunning six-wicket win over the West Indies during the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 in Bristol.

Just 24 hours after their men’s side earned their historic first-ever T20I victory against India during the two-match series in Belfast, their women’s side scripted their name in the history book with the six-wicket win over West Indies during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026.
After an unwanted record of 21 failed attempts previously, Ireland finally opened their account in the WT20 WC with their first-ever victory, which will inspire a huge generation to dream big and play at this stage of the competition.

At the County Ground in Bristol, the Ireland captain, Gaby Lewis, won the toss and decided to bowl first. They continued to pick regular wickets inside the powerplay and put regular pressure on the opponent batters. The West Indies batters, despite getting starts, failed to convert them into a big score.

Chinelle Henry remained unbeaten on 27 runs off 21 balls at a strike rate of 128.57 with three boundaries, but it wasn't enough to lift West Indies past 128/7 in their 20 overs. Cara Murray and Aimee Maguire shared four wickets between them for 35 runs in eight overs at an economy rate of 4.25.

Ireland completed the successful chase by six wickets with 11 balls to spare. Their number three batter, Orla Prendergast, slammed a fine knock of 63 runs off 44 balls at a strike rate of 143.18, shouldering on eight boundaries and a couple of sixes,
That ended their 21-match losing streak in the Women’s T20 WC. This was the most after Bangladesh’s 16-match losing streak between 2016 and 2023.
“It just means so much. We’ve had the belief all throughout this tournament and unfortunately it hadn’t come together just yet. But the belief we all had was there constantly. So just so much relief to finally have that win and so much happiness.” Prendergast expressed on the emotions of the game.

Ireland would hope to continue the same success in the shortest format of the game in the future and come back hard in the next T20 World Cup edition.
