The ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League is now entering its final stage, and the race for the IPL 2026 playoffs has become extremely intense. Royal Challengers Bengaluru finished at the top of the points table, and the defending champions are now set to face Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1 on May 26 at the HPCA Stadium.

However, amid this positive news, RCB have suffered a major setback ahead of the crucial playoff clash. England all-rounder Jacob Bethell has returned home and will miss the IPL 2026 playoffs after suffering a finger injury. Bethell featured in seven matches for RCB this season but missed the final league-stage game due to injury. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed that the young all-rounder has returned to England as the national team prepares for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand, starting on June 4.

The 22-year-old England star was unavailable for RCB’s IPL clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday, and the ECB later stated that he “will be fully assessed and monitored by the England Men’s medical team on his return.” His absence now comes as a significant blow for RCB ahead of the high-pressure IPL 2026 playoffs.

Jacob Bethell finger injury — Is RCB's England star available for Qualifier 1 at Dharamsala?

Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Saturday officially confirmed that England all-rounder Jacob Bethell will return home after suffering an injury during the match against Punjab Kings. The young England star is now expected to play no further part in the ongoing IPL 2026 season. Bethell will be assessed by the England medical team ahead of England’s upcoming Test series against New Zealand, which begins on June 4. This also means that the 22-year-old will not be available for RCB’s crucial Qualifier 1 clash against the Gujarat Titans on Tuesday in Dharamsala.

“Jacob Bethell sustained an injury to his left ring finger during our game against PBKS. He will return to England to be assessed ahead of their Test series,” the IPL franchise posted on X.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) also confirmed the development in an official statement. “The England and Wales Cricket Board has agreed with Royal Challengers Bangalore that top-order batter Jacob Bethell will return to the UK after sustaining a left ring finger injury while playing in the Indian Premier League. He will be fully assessed and monitored by the England Men’s medical team on his return to determine his availability for selection for the Rothesay first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s, starting on Thursday 4 June,” England stated on their official X account.

Jacob Bethell's 96 runs in 7 innings — The numbers that show why RCB can't afford to lose him again

Jacob Bethell entered the playing XI for Royal Challengers Bengaluru after fellow England batter Phil Salt suffered a finger injury earlier in the season. Although the young left-hander did not enjoy a standout campaign with the bat, scoring 96 runs in seven innings, he still provided balance and depth to the RCB batting lineup during crucial stages of the tournament.

Following Bethell’s injury, Venkatesh Iyer returned to the top order and played a fighting knock of 44 runs in the previous match. However, Bethell’s absence ahead of the IPL 2026 playoffs has now become a major concern for RCB, especially considering the importance of squad depth during the knockout stage.

Dream11 alert: Should you pick Jacob Bethell for RCB's qualifier 1 fantasy XI or find a replacement?

The England and Wales Cricket Board has confirmed that Jacob Bethell will return to the UK after sustaining a left ring finger injury during his IPL 2026 campaign with Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The ECB and RCB have mutually agreed on the decision, making his participation in Qualifier 1 at Dharamsala highly unlikely. For Dream11 users, this is a clear signal — do not risk Bethell in your fantasy XI until there is an official update on his recovery and availability.

Even before the injury, Bethell had found it difficult to justify his place in the RCB lineup. The England top-order batter managed just 96 runs in seven innings as Phil Salt's replacement at the top of the order, well below the standard expected of him. With Qualifier 1 being a knockout game where every run counts, RCB simply cannot afford to carry an unfit or underfired player. The stakes are too high for a gamble of that size.

In conclusion, Jacob Bethell is best avoided for your Dream11 Qualifier 1 squad. Phil Salt, who has rejoined the RCB camp and is nearing full fitness, is the smarter and safer pick at the top of the order. Lock your team only after the official playing XI drops on match day — that one decision alone could be the difference between winning and losing your fantasy contest.
