After the dismissal of Shivam Dube during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash between the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Gujarat Titans at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, the home side needed someone to provide them with a late finish from one end after a struggling start to the first half of the innings.

Jamie Overton walked out in the middle at number eight. The expectation was there from the England all-rounder, who had already shown his batting abilities at the start of the competition against the Rajasthan Royals and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

On the second ball of the 19th over of the innings, Overton drove the full and wide delivery against Arshad Khan for a boundary through the mid-off region as the ball bounced away to the ropes. The fielder got his hands there but wasn’t able to stop it fully before it rolled over the ropes.

The very next delivery was on the good length outside the off stump from the left-arm pacer as the right-handed batter stood tall and bludgeoned it with a lofted drive for a massive six over the long-off region.

The fourth delivery was short and wide of the off stump as Overton got under it and cut it over the backward point region with full power for another boundary. He shuffled across and flicked the fifth ball of the over for another boundary in the fine leg region.

The bowler, however, had the last laugh with the wicket of the batter on 18 runs as he failed to connect the slower short ball properly and went back to the hut for 18 runs, shouldering on three boundaries and one six.

GT starts strongly against CSK’s small target

Ruturaj Gaikwad finished with an unbeaten 74 runs off 60 balls with the help of six boundaries and four sixes at a strike rate of 123.33. With a strong second half of their batting, the home side finished with 158 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their allotted 20 overs.

Gujarat, in reply, started strong with 55 runs inside the power play without any damage. Shubman Gill, before being dismissed, played a fine knock of 33 runs in 23 balls with three sixes and one boundary.

Brief Scores (at the time of writing): GT 138/1 (S Sudharsan 73*, Noor Ahmed 1/29) vs CSK 158/7 (Ruturaj Gaikwad 74*, Kagiso Rabada 3/29)
