When the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) posted 175 runs in their allotted 20 overs, the Delhi Capitals (DC) needed a decent start with the bat in the second innings during their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 encounter at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. However, the surface had slowed down a lot, challenging the batters to play the big shots.

Bengaluru was aware of the surface and how they could put the Capitals under pressure, picking early wickets inside the powerplay. And they also needed some electrifying fielding performance to create pressure on the DC batters.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar was given the role to bowl the first over with the ball swinging in the air under the lights. On the fourth delivery of the over, he sent back the opening batter, Pathum Nissanka, for one run. The right-handed batter came down the track and was trapped before the stumps.

In his very next over, he sent back Kurun Nair for five runs. This time, the Karnataka batter used his feet and slashed the short of a good length delivery outside the off stump. But he didn’t get the right elevation along with the placement, which saw Phil Salt diving forward to grab a fine catch.

Two balls later, he found the outside edge of Sameer Rizvi, but the focus on that delivery was the wicket-keeper, Jitesh Sharma, who grabbed a spectacular one-handed catch. He walked forward to force it through the offside. But he found the thick outside edge on it as Jitesh dived full length to his right to grab the superb catch.

Bhuvneshwar had figures of 3/9 in two overs while the Capitals struggled their way to 22/3 in three overs as the chase seemed to be getting away from them.

RCB make clinical start with ball in 175-run defense

Salt was the key member of Bengaluru’s batting with a fine knock of 63 runs off 38 balls with the help of four boundaries and three sixes at a strike rate of 165.79, while Tim David clubbed 26 runs in 17 balls. But apart from them, most of the batters failed to find the sweet timing off the middle.

They added just eight runs in the last two overs of the first innings to finish with 175/8. The responsibility for Delhi in the chase was on KL Rahul, who raced away to 30 runs off 16 balls with three boundaries and two sixes.

Brief Scores (at the time of writing): DC 70/3 (KL Rahul 44*, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 3/9) vs RCB- 175/8 (Phil Salt 63, Axar Patel 2/18, Kuldeep Yadav 2/32)
