"Kapil Dev's Signature Is Forged" — Kirti Azad calls out viral 1983 World Cup hotel register post as completely fake
Kirti Azad dismissed the viral 1983 World Cup hotel register post as fake and confirmed that Kapil Dev’s signature shown in the image was forged.

A viral social media post linked to India’s 1983 World Cup-winning team has now been called completely fake by former India cricketer Kirti Azad. The post showed what looked like a hotel bill from the night India won the World Cup on June 25, 1983. The bill included items like whiskey, beer, cigarettes, and ashtrays and even carried a signature claimed to be Kapil Dev’s.
The picture quickly spread across social media and created huge discussions among cricket fans. Many people reacted to the alcohol and cigarette purchases mentioned in the bill, while others simply enjoyed the nostalgic connection to India’s historic World Cup triumph. However, Kirti Azad has now clearly stated that the bill is fake and that the Indian team never even visited that hotel.
"We Never Went to This Hotel" — Kirti Azad confirms the viral 1983 register is a complete lie
Kirti Azad strongly rejected the viral claim through a post on X. The former India all-rounder said the team was staying at the Westmoreland Hotel near Lord’s Cricket Ground in London and celebrated there throughout the night after winning the World Cup. According to Azad, the team never visited the hotel shown in the viral picture.
Azad wrote, “This is fake. It is all over social media. We stayed at Westmoreland Hotel, next to Lords cricket Ground, London. After the victory on 25 June 1983 celebrations took place all night till morning of 26th June. We never went to this hotel. The signature of Kapil Dev is also forged.”
His statement ended the rumours around the viral hotel register. Azad also made it clear that Kapil Dev’s signature shown in the picture was not real. The clarification helped fans understand that the viral image was not connected to the actual 1983 World Cup celebrations.
Westmoreland Hotel, Lord's, 25 June 1983 — The real story of how India celebrated that night
Even though the viral post turned out to be fake, it once again brought back memories of one of the greatest moments in Indian cricket history. India shocked the mighty West Indies at Lord’s under Kapil Dev’s captaincy and won their first-ever Cricket World Cup. The West Indies had already won the previous two World Cups and were favourites once again in 1983.
Senior journalist Vijay Lokapally had earlier shared interesting stories from that famous night during the “2 Sloggers” podcast. He revealed that many restaurants in London had already closed by the time the Indian players started celebrating. According to him, the players eventually had burgers while continuing the celebrations through the night.
Lokapally also recalled that the team bus driver was stopped by police for driving beyond legal working hours. Even after the players told the police that they were newly crowned world champions, the driver was still fined. However, the cricketers later signed autographs for the policemen, making it a memorable moment for everyone involved.
Social media reacted after finding out the viral 1983 post was a forgery
After Kirti Azad’s clarification, many fans on social media admitted that they had believed the viral picture was real. Some users thanked Azad for correcting the misinformation, while others said it showed how easily fake historical posts can spread online without verification.
