Lucknow Super Giants may already be out of the IPL 2026 playoff race. Still, they dealt a major blow to Chennai Super Kings’ qualification hopes with a dominant seven-wicket victory on Friday. Riding on Kartik Sharma’s impressive 71, CSK posted a competitive total of 187 runs on the board.

However, Mitchell Marsh played a sensational knock of 90 runs off just 38 deliveries to guide Lucknow to another memorable victory. The Australian opener looked in complete control throughout the chase and dismantled the CSK bowling attack with fearless stroke play.

The match not only brought positive energy to Rishabh Pant’s side but also produced several electrifying moments on the field. One of the biggest highlights came when Marsh took on CSK pacer Anshul Kamboj in the fifth over. The Australian opener smashed four consecutive sixes and a boundary in the over, collecting 28 runs and helping LSG race to 86/0 in the powerplay. Marsh also completed a blistering half-century in just 21 balls.

The Over that silenced CSK — Marsh's 28-run carnage in Lucknow

Chasing a challenging target of 187, Lucknow Super Giants got off to a brilliant start through their Australian opening pair. While Josh Inglis played a steady knock of 36 and anchored one end, Mitchell Marsh took complete control at the other end by attacking the Chennai bowlers from the start.

Marsh reached his half-century in just 21 balls, smashing six boundaries and four sixes during his explosive innings. The biggest moment came in the fifth over when he completely dismantled Anshul Kamboj. The LSG opener hammered four consecutive sixes in the over and added another boundary, collecting a massive 28 runs. At one stage, it looked like Marsh could hit sixes off every ball, but Anshul managed to stop him from scoring on one delivery.

With that over, Anshul Kamboj recorded the most expensive powerplay over ever bowled by a Chennai Super Kings bowler in IPL history. The previous record was held by Mukesh Choudhary, who conceded 27 runs to Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2024. Mitchell Marsh also became the joint second LSG batter to score 28 runs in a single IPL over, matching Nicholas Pooran’s achievement against Tristan Stubbs last season.

4 Sixes, 1 Over - Kamboj had no answer to Marsh's brutality

Mitchell Marsh unleashed his explosive hitting power at the Ekana Stadium during Lucknow Super Giants’ chase of 188 against Chennai Super Kings. Alongside Josh Inglis, Marsh gave the hosts a dream start, helping LSG race to 39 runs in just four overs.

The turning point came when Marsh attacked CSK pacer Anshul Kamboj in the fifth over. Kamboj has been one of Chennai’s standout bowlers this season and is even in contention for the Purple Cap. However, Marsh completely dominated the young pacer, smashing four sixes in the over and changing the momentum of the match within minutes.

For Chennai, Akash Singh was the most successful bowler for Lucknow Supergiants, taking three wickets for 26 runs in four overs. Mohammed Shami and Shahbaz Ahmed took one wicket each. For CSK, Karthik hit six fours and five sixes during his 42-ball innings. Shivam Dube scored an unbeaten 32, and Dewald Brevis contributed 25 runs.

CSK shell-shocked — What this 28-run over does to the playoff race

Lucknow Super Giants may already be out of the IPL 2026 playoff race, but they delivered a massive blow to Chennai Super Kings with a dominant seven-wicket win on Friday. Despite having a strong squad on paper, LSG have struggled throughout the season and currently sit at the bottom of the points table with just three wins from 11 matches.

However, Mitchell Marsh’s explosive assault completely changed the momentum of the contest. His brutal 28-run over against Anshul Kamboj put CSK under immediate pressure and allowed Lucknow to take full control of the chase during the powerplay itself. The fearless batting display left Chennai with no chance to recover in the match.

The defeat has now seriously damaged Chennai’s playoff hopes. Chennai Super Kings are currently sixth in the table with 12 points from 12 matches and only two league games remaining. Their qualification hopes are no longer in their own hands, and another defeat could almost end their campaign. CSK’s net run rate of +0.027 also remains a major concern in the tight race for the final playoff spots.

LSG vs CSK, Match 60, IPL 2026 – Brief Scorecard

  • Chennai Super Kings: 187/5
  • Lucknow Super Giants: 188/3
  • Result: Lucknow Super Giants won by 7 wickets.
