Can CSK still qualify for IPL 2026 Playoffs after 7-Wicket loss to LSG in Lucknow? Complete scenario explained
Here is the complete qualification scenario of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) reaching to the playoffs of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 after their defeat against LSG in Lucknow.

After the seven-wicket defeat of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, the question remained whether the five-time champions could qualify for the playoffs of the Indian Premier League 2026.
CSK is currently in the sixth position of the points table with six victories in 12 clashes at a net run rate of +0.027, while the Rajasthan Royals is just over him in the fifth rank of the table with the same number of victories in 11 encounters at a NRR of +0.082.
LSG beat CSK by 7 wickets in Lucknow — Marsh’s 90 ends the yellow army’s winning run
Winning the toss, the home captain, Rishabh Pant, decided to bowl first on a tacky surface, which was creating pressure on the batters with extra bounce from the pacers. The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side couldn’t do much inside the powerplay, with 37 runs coming off the first six overs for the loss of two wickets.
However, Dewald Brevis and Kartik Sharma posted a strong partnership of 70 runs for the fourth wicket, while the latter celebrated a fine knock of 71 runs off 42 balls at a strike rate of 169.25, thanks to five sixes and six boundaries. The Indian all-rounder Shivam Dube’s explosive 32* shouldered them to 187/5 in their allotted 20 overs.

Lucknow went off to a flying start, thanks to the 135-run opening stand. Mitchell Marsh made a massive contribution of 90 runs in just 38 balls at a strike rate of 236.44, scoring nine boundaries and seven sixes. Nicholas Pooran’s unbeaten 32 runs completed the chase by seven wickets with 20 balls to spare.
CSK drop to 6th on 12 points — Must win both remaining games to stay alive
CSK has now dropped to the sixth position of the table and will play just two more games against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on May 18 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai before they face the Gujarat Titans on May 21 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The 2023 champions will now need to win both their remaining matches and some other results to go their way to have a chance to end in the top four spots. Punjab Kings’ defeat against the Mumbai Indians increased the chances of the CSK side to be among the top four by 47%. But the defeat has dropped the chances to below 25%.
The route won’t be easy, facing two quality sides, especially with the number of injured players they have in the squad. But they will need to give their best shot in the next two encounters.
