In the first eight innings of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, the Lucknow Super Giants’ middle-order batter, Nicholas Pooran, struggled a lot with just 82 runs coming off his bat at an average of nearly 10 and a strike rate of just over 100. He was getting dismissed inside the 30-yard circle, and the pressure was massive on the southpaw.

For Lucknow Super Giants’ do-or-die clash against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium, he got promoted to number three. Their captain, Rishabh Pant, talked about allowing the former West Indies player, given the skill he has displayed over the years.

Nicholas Pooran nails Will Jacks’ over for three sixes

Pooran was on three runs in as many deliveries when the stand-in MI captain, Suryakumar Yadav, did a favor for the left-handed batter by bringing the part-time off-spinner, Will Jacks, into the attack on the fifth over of the innings.

And the new number three seemed to be waiting for that chance. He welcomed the England spinner for a massive 91-meter six. It was a tossed-up delivery round the wicket. It drifted in and was right in the arc of the batter, who leaned into the shot and smoked it over the long-on fence.

Two deliveries later, the Trinidad batter picked up the tossed-up sliding ball and launched the slog sweep over the deep square leg for a small six. He continued the same aggression with another boundary on the very next delivery. The southpaw didn’t miss out against the leg-lined delivery and deposited the slog sweep behind square for a six.

The veteran connected two more sixes against Allah Ghazanfar and celebrated his half-century off just 16 deliveries. It was the second-fastest fifty for the Super Giants, and surprisingly, all the top four instances of the list belong to Pooran.

LSG lose track after Pooran’s dismissal

By the end of eight overs, the visitors reached 123 runs for the loss of one wicket as Pooran was unbeaten on 63 runs off just 20 balls with the help of one boundary and eight sixes. But he was dismissed on the very first ball of the next over.

Suddenly, the Super Giants lost their track to find themselves 160/5 in 12.1 overs. That meant they lost four wickets for just 37 runs in the last 25 balls. Just when they seemed to be crossing the 250+ run easily, MI had the chance to restrict them under 220.

Brief Scores (at the time of writing): LSG- 192/5 (N Pooran 63, Corbin Bosch 2/20) vs MI.
