Both the Lucknow Super Giants and the Mumbai Indians had been fighting hard to avoid the wooden spoon during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 as the last two-positioned sides met each other at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The meeting was vital for both sides to keep their slim playoff chances alive.

Mumbai Indians' Suryakumar Yadav, replacing Hardik Pandya due to a viral fever, won the toss and decided to bowl first on a surface which was expected to get better in the second innings. The upcoming dew would potentially make it easier for them to chase the target down.

AM Ghazanfar sends back Josh Inglis in IPL 2026 clash

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) handed Josh Inglis the debut cap as they decided to go with four overseas batters, including Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, and Nicholas Pooran, who hadn’t been in a sweet touch in the ongoing competition. Inglis's opening the batting made it their fourth opening pair of the season.

Watch the video here:

The right-handed batter opened his account with a fine boundary in the second over of the innings. It was an angled delivery as Inglis used that pace and waited for the ball to arrive, and played the flick to place it backward of the square fielder to beat the fielder for a boundary.

He opened the next over against Allah Ghazanfar with two consecutive boundaries. The first delivery was short as he rocked back in the crease and pulled it over the deep mid-wicket before slicing the second ball towards the backward point region for the same result.

But the Afghanistan spinner had the last laugh with the wicket of the Australian batter on 13. He went with a carrom ball. The length wasn’t short enough for Inglis to pull as it went straight in the air, where the mid-on fielder grabbed the simple catch.

LSG gets strong start inside powerplay

Despite the early wicket of Inglis, Lucknow didn’t let the run rate go down. Mitchell Marsh clubbed Bumrah for six and three consecutive boundaries, while SKY helped him with the bowling change of introducing Will Jacks in the fifth over.

Pooran just used all his power to nail Jacks for three sixes in that over before slamming Ghazanfar with the same aggression. It was already the best power play for the Super Giants this season.

Brief Scores (at the time of writing): LSG- 123/2 (Nicholas Pooran 63, Corbin Bosch 1/16) vs MI.
